Elderly mom has really bad ankle pain that comes and goes. We saw a foot and ankle specialist and the doctor told us that it was nerve pain being caused by her back problems / pain.

What's the right type of doctor to see about that? Spinal / neurology? Neuropathic pain? Orthopedic? Chiropractor?

Which type of doctors give cortisone shots or prescribe pain management medications (hydrocodone, corticosteroids, etc.)? Not really sure this problem can be cured, she is too frail for any kind of surgery.

Trying to avoid seeing a doctor and being told that they are not the right specialist for her case / can't do anything for her and she has to see someone else.

Also interested in advice if anyone here has struggled with this type of pain. We are thinking of getting her a new recliner so she can lay out flat at night to give her back a rest / stretch. She lives in her chair 24/7.

I would guess neurology especially if spinal surgery is out. Nerve ablation surgery is minimally invasive and may help. Or maybe some steroid injections and physical therapy. A Neurologist should be able to help and refer you to the right place if they can't.

I had this.. kind of. It was a terrible pinched nerve in my back (I think) and it radiated down through my leg. It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt and I’ve had two children. Chiro knocked it out with a tens unit.

Find a PT preferably with their OCS. They can start working with her while you wait on a Neurologist to eventually order an MRI. Granted research shows that imaging is not necessary and that a well round PT should be able to develop a differential diagnosis to help her

Neurosurgeon or ortho with a spinal specialty.

All of the ones you list except for the Chiro can give shots or pain mang. Some Chiros may be able to, but generally speaking most don't.

I would go w/ Ortho or Neuro first, get some tests run, and figure out the prognosis. From there, you can see if medication, therapy, or chiro would be the best route to go.

If the foot/ankle Dr is thinking nerve pain, I would not go the chiro route until seeing a specialist first and seeing if they recommend that route.

Thanks to all for the replies, it means a lot to me. We are leaning towards seeing a Neurologist, will make sure they can address pain management before we book anything. Gotta get mom some help.

Thank God for TigerDroppings. Pretty soon they'll have the Christmas lights up on the TD logo. Thanks again, Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Neurosurgeon or an Orthopedist specializing in the spine. They may refer her to a pain management doctor if they think that’s a better course.

If she’s older surgery is unlikely. Where is she located?

PM+R doctor with training in intervention spine (lumbar epidural steroid injections, spinal cord stimulator). Would probably start some gabapentin and have physical therapy do a TENS unit trial initially, then go from there.

I’d recommend a manual therapist
