There’s lots of keto threads on here, many of which discuss alcohol consumption (or lack thereof). But I want to restrict the discussion specifically to this issue. For a disciplined dieter (i.e. one who’s not going to pound a bunch of non-keto food after drinking a glass or two of wine), what is the real truth around whether or not one can successfully do the keto diet while still drinking moderate amounts of alcohol. For what it’s worth, I also regularly exercise (run 12-16 miles per week). TIA.

You can drink alcohol on keto given that it is not something high in carbs. A glass of wine will have carbs.

Also, your body will stop burning fat to burn the alcohol. For maximum results, you should stop or extremely limited alcohol consumption. I would strongly recommend stopping alcohol consumption in order to get into ketosis.

Any dry white or red wine, you’d have to drink bottles, bottles, of wine before it kicks you out of ketosis. The “carbs” are actual called “ carbohydrate by difference” meaning the leftovers from fermentation. And we see this with BG levels not rising after drinking a glass(es) of wine as well. I’ve found mine drop about 10.

With spirits, the distillation process itself “cleans” the spirit and doesn’t allow the leftovers into the final product.

I lift weights 4 to 5 times a week, and drink 2 to 3 times a week. When im doing keto, i drink whisky and water. Ive still lost weight. Ive done keto twice, each time was around 3 or 4 months staying around 25 carbs a day. They said that your body will stop burning fat to burn the alcohol. If that is true, then the way i look at it is if im drinking alcohol, im probably sitting on the couch, or sitting down having dinner, so not much fat would be burned regardless. Whisky and water has never kicked me out of ketosis.

Can confirm. Whiskey neat with a single big ice cube is the move for drinking and Keto.

That's a bit of a logical fallacy. Your body is both simultaneously burning and storing fat at all times. Alcohol consumption doesn't cease all fat burning, either. Your body will process the alcohol before processing other foods, but it likely doesn't shut down fat burning.

Drinking in moderation while in ketosis is fine. Stick to spirits on ice or with carb-free mixers or some red wine. Just dont overdo it and don't let it turn into a food binge.

If you can’t give up alc...don’t do keto. It won’t work.

Seems like every time I’ve gone low carb...South Beach or whatever....even straight liquor slams the brakes on my progress. I’ll stay in ketosis but it takes a few days to see any further weight loss after a couple of drinks.

Also it fricks with your will power so beware.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot my favorite book. Check out the book/pamphlet called The Drinking Man's Diet as this is basically what you are thinking of. It was first written in the 50's or 60's or something. I have the ebook as it isn't that long of a read ~10 minutes.

Alcohol is a carbohydrate. Moderation may not kick you out of ketosis, but why chance it?

Thanks for the info and the book recommendation. I think the alcohol could actually be good in a way, as I’m burning 500-700 calories every other day running and am fine with the running burning through the ethanol before it begins burning through fat. I don’t want to get into a calorie deficiency situation on this diet.

No it is not. Alcohol is its own macronutrient, and it is broken down into carbon dioxide and water.

I’m currently not drinking as sometimes it just gets in the way of personal goals. But as to drinking within reason, especially the low-no carb drinks, drinking is “ok”. Touchy subject because we all have different ideas as to what “within reason” means.

Are you going to gain fat because you have a martini with steak and salad for lunch and dinner every day? Probably not. Beer? Maybe. As with food, different adult beverages have different effects on our bodies (and to complicate it more, we all have different reactions to the same types). Some people can develop dependency while others are ok.

Hulk is right as alcohol is its own macro. Alcohol/ethanol, should act like a carbohydrate as they are close in structure. Alcohol acts differently when it enters the body however.

My personal thoughts are a glass or two can be a stress relief that can be good for homeostasis. Drinking may interfere with exercise goals. However, a person can drink as the book recommends and still lose excess weight. Bad choices made while drunk not being mentioned.

Technically alcohol is a carbohydrate, but like hulk and junky said it's really it's own macro as it abides by different rules to be processed once in the body. Weird calroie count per gram too. Martin berkham has a great article on it and covers it in detail in his leangains book.

But my question is, how old are some of you guys? I mean I get drinking and asking these questions if you are college age or right after and single and living the party life. But I believe quite a few of you are mid 30s and up and have families. Why the hell are you drinking all the time if fitness is a lifestyle for you?

Never made sense to me, being married with kids and drinking every night. I get having a glass of whisky on a Friday night while sitting on the back porch or 2-3 on Saturday during football season. Hell I get it at holidays etc. But some of you talk like not drinking is unacceptable. If that's the case...prolly need to reevaluate things.

I know many of you are gonna be pissed about that, but whatever. If you are drinking daily, you are pretty much an alcoholic, just because you sent it doesn't mean it isn't true. Especially if you are having more than one or two a night. It's pretty laughable hearing the excuses and the hand wringing when people are called out on this.

And that's fine, but don't try to come on the health and fitness board and talk about how you shouldn't have to give it up to reach your goals. 1-2 nights during the week and a little on the weekend is one thing, 2-3 a night is something totally different and if you are chasing a goal, fricking go all in and achieve it.

To be fair, nobody in this thread drinking that much. Just a general question about drinking and keto in general.

This is true, but a little preachy.

I would say it this way...no matter what diet and workout plan you follow, minimizing or eliminating alcohol consumption will help in achieving your goals and living a healthier life.
