Just cratered at hour 66 of a 72 hour water fast. Couldn't take it anymore and ate 2 chicken breasts.

I did a 72 a couple months ago, this one was much harder for some reason. Couldn't get my gut over the constant empty feeling stage.

Whelp, guess it'll be the shits in a couple hours when the food hits.

Is there any benefit to a 24 hour fast at this point, like until this time tomorrow?

I’m in hour 3 of a 4 hour fast. I’m dying over here. Starting to get cranky and can’t focus.

My experience is that it works for me. Gets me back into keto, gets the water weight from a carb binge off. I don't eat like a madman after. I usually eat like a madman before it which makes me want/need to fast to fix that.

This ^

I'm 10% bodyfat and never fasted a day in my life or did any of those kooky diet fads.

Eat right, exercise, sleep and you'll get results.

Multi day fasts are good for fast weight loss, it's just common sense. I'll do one right before a beach trip to make my abs visible. It's tough and might not be for everyone, but it works. Don't let the mom science tell you otherwise.

Some say after 48 it’s not worth going any longer. Most say after 72 days you’re doing damage until you get back to another crest which ends up being many days.

Yea, not eating for 72 days will certainly cause damage.

Fasting is very good for you. After about 72 hours or so is when autophagy kicks in. It is a good chance for the body to heal, increases your metabolism, and boosts your growth hormone enormously just for starters.

You get all these benefits from simply getting a consistent dose of 7-9 hours quality sleep each night.

72 hour fast is completely unnecessary, and frankly just stupid.

You don't. You are incredibly wrong. You apparently do not even have an idea of what autophagy is. That amount of sleep does none of that nearly to the extent of fasting.

You're an idiot. What do you think happens in your body when you sleep? GH skyrockets, and autophagy occurs as well. Sure, one night of quality sleep does not induce the same amount as extended fasting. BUT, when you get ample hours of quality sleep on a CONSISTENT basis (daily), you DO get the same effect over time. When the body is over-stressed, autophagy is inhibited greatly. This is one reason why meditation, stress-management, and SLEEP are emphasized now, as RESEARCH as shown how much they affect disease and longevity. We as a people overall do not get enough sleep, whether it's due to work/personal stress, or too much screen time from our phones or TV. This, along with poor diet habits and a sendentary lifestyle contributes disease and poor health markers in general. I'm not saying a 48, 72, or even 96 hour fast does not work in regards to autophagy. I'm saying that it's ridiculously unnecessary, when regular lifestyle choices (i.e. proper sleep) can achieve the same effect when practiced on a CONSISTENT basis.
Go do some research and practice some common sense before embracing yet another trend or "life hack" being pushed by several so called "gurus" on the internet and social media. SMDH

I'm not saying that doing good habits is bad, you are right that sleep will help.

But fasting is undeniably good for you, it isn't some fad in made up science. And autophagy won't occur until you stop eating for multiple days. Fasting should be practiced by perfectly healthy people too, not just by the ill or some such.

You need to take your own advice. Fasting is backed by a ton of science.

Is the autophagy you speak of greater than the autophagy that occurs while in a caloric deficit?

There’s some evidence for intermittent fasting, but these 48/72 hour fasts are just trendy fads right now. All that’s happening is they’re shedding water weight and inducing ketosis, but the potential for significant electrolyte abnormalities caused by acute renal insufficiency and the extra cellular shift triggered by the acidosis outweighs any theoretical benefit.

Had a guy come in two weeks ago after 3 days of fasting with palpitations. He had a creatinine of 2.1 and a potassium of 6.8. He’d been working out during the fast and was effectively in acute renal failure. The reality is nobody doing this drinks enough fluid to compensate especially if they’re concurrently working out.
