Could be but don't think so. He regularly picks up the bar tab and refuses to let us give him any money.

Like I said, he is a great guy away from the course .

He seemed remorseful when we spoke yesterday afternoon. I think he believes that what he does is no big deal. His argument was that he still has to hit the shot, I told him that is not the point, we want to play by the rules.

Hitting a shot from a nice fluffy lie almost on a tee is definitely not the same thing as if the ball is sitting down in the rough.

Then you of course can not under any circumstance kick him out of the group. I would even go as far to just telling everyone to feel free to bump it if that means keeping the guy in the group that buys drinks after

I know a guy at LT that tried to play a ball that was resting between two roots. It went straight up and hit him in the forehead. He needed stitches and could have easily lost an eye

I had a buddy who insisted on playing a shot under some low hanging limbs after I told him to just kick it out. He hit one of the limbs and popped himself in the mouth with the club head. When he smiled I could see his teeth through his lip. He also finished the last 2.5 holes before driving himself to the ER for stitches.

Sounds like it really has developed into a mental hang-up. As someone stated earlier, his bad habit has become part of his pre-shot routine. It’s in his head now. He won’t improve his game hitting improved lies every shot.

I can understand if someone plays a couple times a year and is just enjoying a round with friends or family, but a group regular has an obligation to his partners to play by the rules, even if no money is involved.

We had a huge blowup today, one of the guys always bumps his ball every time. If he hits a ball in the rough and has a bad lie, he will pick his ball up under the pretense of identifying his ball and of course he always gives himself a better lie.

This morning on the first tee, we said play it down (for his benefit), two holes later he was bumping his ball. 2 guys called him on it and the argument began.

Needless to say, it was a tense golf round and afterwards everyone just took off. I am not sure how the group goes on from here without losing a few guys.

What's amazing is the guy off the course is a great guy who will do anything for anyone and very enjoyable to be around we have been friends for years.

It's a huge deal because we always have a money game going on and some guys don't want to pay him going forward because they don't trust him right now.

Just don't get why he keeps doing what he does...

Guess that I am going to have to be the peacemaker in all of this. But the crap that he pulls has to stop.

So funny that we have an older guy here in Dullsville who is exactly the same way. He's in his late 70's but still a 2 HDCP from the gold tees. Has probably shot his age 100 times. He played golf at Vandy in the early 60's.

He's both an MTSU and Vandy booster, plays the piano at his church every time they open the doors, buys dinner for everyone almost every time, but he's the biggest cheater I've ever seen. His first name is Don. They call him Don Fudge. Everyone says it's because he's so competitive. To me, it's just lying.

I agree.

And what is funny, he is absolutely magic in a bunker, his get up and down rate is amazing and he never messes with the ball in the bunker.

I heard about a group in Florida where your winnings were all contributed to an “end of year party.”

Handicap sandbagging ceased.

People enjoyed playing for position on the “money list.”

And at the end of the year, they had a great party with some awards given out. Last on the money list got a fishing license.

Let him continue to play with the group, but don’t allow him into the bet.

Tuesday Updated :

I wish that I had a better report.

We teed off at 7:30 this morning and everyone but one guy was cordial and I told him to knock it off, we want a fresh start.

Anyway, we started off well enough and our Guy even birdied #2, then the wheels came off his round.

He started badly topping the ball for about 4 holes before getting out of it.

He was well on his way to a high 90's round and he was very tense all day and I am sure that led to the topping.

On number 17, that has water down the left by the green, he pulled his approach shot into the water. He then took his bag off the cart and walked in and left.

He didn't say a word to anyone. I tried to call him and he didn't answer.

Where does this stand now ? I am not sure.

I will continue to send him the email invites, but he might be done for a while and I hate that since we all know how hard it is to get 8 guys every week to play since it is getting hot.

That’s some childish behavior right there. I haven’t been playing long, but I know not to do that. Every now and then I’ll pick up my ball if I’m having a really bad hole (never when playing for money), but I always finish the round.

I feel like what he did is the adult version of a temper tantrum when you take away a kids toy.

Unfortunate situation for you.

Have y’all tried playing not for money a few rounds and see if he cuts it out?

He is probably topping it because he isn't used to hitting it where it lies. I am sure that led to pressing and worse play.

Agree on how hard it is to get a consistent group going. If he comes back things will probably be better than ever. Guys usually get stronger after a fight women grudge forever.

I have, but I can't change the whole game for one guy.

And to be honest, this group is so evenly matched, there is hardly a time where the pot gets too big.

We play group skins and birdies. Within a individual foursome we might play Wolf.

The money is usually something to laugh about over beers after the round. Wouldn't be surprised by years end that most of us are back to even.

Learning to play the ball down is tough. Bumping becomes second nature. It was in his head. He may not want to play that way. Oh well.

Sugar land Tx.

I decided to retire early , so the guys that I play with are either retired or about to. We play a rotation of 4 courses around here.

When I joined the group there was 10 guys with someone always out of town or can't play. Now down to 8 or 7 ?

This.

He may be used to sweeping the ball and not having a perfect lie hurts him more than guys that hit down on it.

I think so too.

Plus, he sent me a text an hour ago that he is taking some time off from golf.
