We have a group of 6-8 guys that play twice a week.

We had a huge blowup today, one of the guys always bumps his ball every time. If he hits a ball in the rough and has a bad lie, he will pick his ball up under the pretense of identifying his ball and of course he always gives himself a better lie.

This morning on the first tee, we said play it down (for his benefit), two holes later he was bumping his ball. 2 guys called him on it and the argument began.

Needless to say, it was a tense golf round and afterwards everyone just took off. I am not sure how the group goes on from here without losing a few guys.

What's amazing is the guy off the course is a great guy who will do anything for anyone and very enjoyable to be around we have been friends for years.

It's a huge deal because we always have a money game going on and some guys don't want to pay him going forward because they don't trust him right now.

Just don't get why he keeps doing what he does...

Guess that I am going to have to be the peacemaker in all of this. But the crap that he pulls has to stop.

Tuesday Updated :

I wish that I had a better report.

We teed off at 7:30 this morning and everyone but one guy was cordial and I told him to knock it off, we want a fresh start.

Anyway, we started off well enough and our Guy even birdied #2, then the wheels came off his round.

He started badly topping the ball for about 4 holes before getting out of it.

He was well on his way to a high 90's round and he was very tense all day and I am sure that led to the topping.

On number 17, that has water down the left by the green, he pulled his approach shot into the water. He then took his bag off the cart and walked in and left.

He didn't say a word to anyone. I tried to call him and he didn't answer.

Where does this stand now ? I am not sure.

I will continue to send him the email invites, but he might be done for a while and I hate that since we all know how hard it is to get 8 guys every week to play since it is getting hot.

We have a couple of times trying to be pleasant about it. But 2 guys called him a damn cheater today and then the cussing started.

It's like he does it and doesn't even know he does it.

I have gotten some brutal texts about it the past hour. We might have to sit him for a while.

I’m glad I’m not so competitive that I would cheat to better my outcome. My frick ups are mine. Just play it as it lies and try to get better for the next time.

Identifying the ball is a lame excuse. It’s rare 2 balls are THAT close to one another in the rough. I’ve rarely ever needed to identify a ball in the rough, and when I do I don’t touch the ball, I gently move a couple blades of grass to identify my markings or something that let me knows it’s my ball.

Have him cheat the professional way. The pros always act like they’re going to hit 3wood in the rough and set up to that shot (matting down the grass behind the ball in the process) and then have an epiphany that the iron was the correct play all along

Exactly, the money is not so big or the point. This guy owned his own company, he is loaded.

Like I said, he is a great person away from the course. He is always throwing parties or having bbqs and everyone is invited plus wives...

He is always low 80s player that can make birdies. I don't think that he needs the advantage really, its in his head.

I have played with plenty of guys like this & after doing for so long they really don’t know they are doing it. It’s like it’s part of their preshot routine.

If the guy is as good of a guy as you say off the course, have the discussion away from the course. But be honest and fair with him. If he can’t handle the truth in a mature adult conversation, then he probably doesn’t deserve to be a part of your group.

Had the same situation in our weekday group. Multiple warnings, finally told him he needed to find another group. Shame but he just couldn’t or wouldn’t stop.

What someone is like when they are alone is how a person truly is. The guy cheats because he is a cheater especially if he knows better. I’d be willing to bet he did some shady shite in his business he owned too.

If he refuses to stop then either you guys live with it or get rid of him from the group. Neither is a good option imo.

The guys I know who do this are either terrible and no one gives a shite, or they can’t help themselves and would screw their own brother over on a business deal.

Updated

The guy has been given a one time chance to redeem himself and he knows that eyes will be on him.

Still not sure why people cheat at it. They have to live with knowing that their scores are not real.

He has the talent to shoot good scores on his own merit.

I never understood why people cheat at golf. You’re not gonna get better if you don’t post a real score. I ain’t gonna lie Though. If my ball is sitting on a root and I’m not playing for money or a in a tournament I’ll move it backwards.

In money games, the rules must be established and overtly agreed to before the match. It saves time, arguments, and friendships. If you play it as it lies, a bump is a stroke.

You may be correct, though. Bumping can be habit forming, and he may do it occasionally without thinking. Having said that, I would be aghast if I had done so unconsciously and would want to be called out immediately, rather than after a round.

However, if he does this regularly and is not apologetic or embarrassed, it is a character flaw. You find out a lot about an individual’s character from the way he carries himself on the golf course. Money generally brings out the worst and best in people.

It's not a money thing for him, like I said he is loaded.

It's his ego that drive him to do this, I believe now.

Every game, we say play it down and if there is an issue like a root, we will give him relief, nobody wants to get hurt.

We play tomorrow at 7:30am.

We shall see.

The only time me or my playing partners will give free relief is if the ball is sitting on a root or a root will definitely contact the club on a swing. I've snapped a 5-iron in two at the hosel because of a small root I couldn't see. We are not tour pro's with tour vans in the parking lot waiting to give us a brand new set of clubs, so no need to break clubs or risk someone getting hurt with debris etc.

But bumping or moving your ball in the rough is definitely shady. If it's not something that can break your club or endanger someone, play that shite as it lies. It's part of the game.

I know a guy at LT that tried to play a ball that was resting between two roots. It went straight up and hit him in the forehead. He needed stitches and could have easily lost an eye. We adopted the root rule after hearing/see the aftermath of that. That's pretty much the only time I'm ok with bumping it. Even then I'll generally take an unplayable lie and penalty

Get this out of your head. He could be worth $100m and still be a greedy, stingy human.
