Why are so many big names not at Pebble this week?

They took the money to go play in Saudi.

It’s not nearly as fun for pros as they want you to think. With all the amateurs, it’s a long day out there. The weather isn’t typically that great either. Pretty hit or miss. This is the first time I remember little wind and sun in a while.

^ This. The Tour should really consider moving the “Florida swing” to the first part of the calendar after Hawaii and then go back to the west coast. It’s not like most of those folks are flying coach or driving from event to event.

It's about the TV though. They need their usual 2-5pm Central time window and you can't do that playing in Florida in January.

The tournament broadcast on NBC is atrocious. Cantlay is playing Spyglass and they don’t have cameras on him

Yeah. I don’t think they have a single camera on spyglass. They also show way too much MP.

ESPN did this morning following the Spieth group but there has to be limits on broadcasting rights while NBC had theirs going in the afternoon. They only had specific holes and 1 afternoon marquee group on plus.

They don’t care for the poa annua

I had 2 caddies almost get in a fist fight over a 10 foot putt at Pebble on #8

Both had worked there 10+ yrs

And most don’t like dealing with amateurs when it’s truly their livelihood

On top of that, 6 of the top 10 smallest greens on the PGA Tour are at Pebble Beach

Sorry

Reading the break. Poa annua requires reading the grain, which changes morning and afternoon on real sunny days

I’m not a good enough golfer for that to matter, but it did to them. LOL

They’re in Saudi. The field used to be really good until the Saudi tourney started. They were released to go play there, but will likely have to play Pebble within the next 3-5 years per their release

This is the first time Saudi has been the same weekend as Pebble. Saudi has been the same weekend as the Waste Management the last couple of years.

But yeah, Saudi is affecting both tournaments each year because players aren't wanting to play the following weekend because of all of the travelling required.

This ain’t the Bing Crosby Clambake anymore. Most established pros have no interest in playing golf with Bill Murray hitting backwards putts and School Boy Q waltzing through your lines on the greens.

I was watching earlier this week when they had groups teeing off at 1 and 10 at am three courses and they were probably pacing 5-5.5 hour rounds unless the broadcasts were off timing wise.

The Bill Murray stuff yesterday on the broadcast was a bit over the top. Was it funny? I suppose but he got so much TV time
