A buddy asked me today when does he need to change/update his putter and frankly I had no clue. What are y'alls thoughts?

When he's lost confidence in the one in his bag.

Tell him to keep track of his GIRs and putts per hole next few times he plays. Depends what he normally shoots, but he should be aiming to keep his average putt per hole to around 1.6 - 1.8. If his average putt per green is over 2, it's probably time to explore new putters or get a lesson to work on his fundamentals.

If your buddy is a good putter, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING.

When the one he's got quits cooperating. Tell him to place it in a dark corner by itself for 6-8 weeks, then revisit to see if it has made an attitude adjustment.

Personally, I believe if you are a regular golfer, you need to own more than one putter. I would say 3 to 4. Like someone said, you will go thru a period where you lose confidence and the "feel" with a certain putter after a while. Having something to change to will help get you out of that slump. I believe having different weights helps also.

1.6 - 1.8.

Come on, that's the putt per hole average of the best putters on tour.

When it inadvertently gets thrown into a lake, lodged very high up in a tree, or mysteriously snapped into four pieces.

At that point I'd say it's about time

When you lose confidence in it. Hell my dad is using the same Ping Anser since the 70s. Another thought would be if your friend has a fault in his stroke and some of the newer putter tech would help that.

i can identity with this. i've used a 2ball white hot for years and loved it. the past couple of years it just left me. i was better from twenty feet than i was from four feet. i just couldn't shake it. went to an old ping b60 last year and hung with it but just wasn't satisfied. i had always been a pretty good putter and it became a head game that i was losing! broke down two months ago and bought one of the new odyssey o works putters and have rediscovered my stroke and now my confidence has returned. it's amazing how the ball rolls off the face of this putter.

Putting is so streaky man. You should change when you have no confidence with what you're putting with.

People say you can't buy a golf game, which is true, but you can buy new equipment to motivate you to get out and practice.

When he can go buy a Scotty because after you drop a kidney on that you will feel to guilty for having spent that kind of cash on a putter and never use anything else.

When he feels the need to change it. I have 3 that I use. Hot with one ATM so I'll stick with it until I need to make the change.

you change a putter whenever you damn well feel like it ... no exchange gifts/points with the spouse, no gifts for the kids, no nothing ...

they are unfaithful, ungrateful objects that will spit in your face as you lay dying ...

According to my dad, never. He still has the Ping he bought 42 years ago.

I just bought my 1st putter this year. My previous putter he bought me when I was 12. So that's 19 years

So sometimes between every few years and never.
