I wanted to get into golf in high school and play on the high school team. Problem was my parents were cheap. Mom bought me a set of Howson graphite shaft clubs with the fairway wood and "driver". Multiple times at the range a head would snap off the club and go tumbling the range. Inevitably there was always someone there willing to stop everyone from hitting so I could go retrieve my club head. It was always super embarrassing to run our about 60 yards to retrieve the clubhead. I never played golf in high school partly due to this.

A couple of years after high school I decided to get a little more into it and upgraded to a set of Dunlop steel shafts I found at a pawn shop. They were actually decent irons to learn with.

A box set of Wilson from Target (2007). Played with them for a long time, then bought some used Ping G2 irons (2012?) that I still play with. Pieced together drivers, woods, and putter.

Tommy Armour 845s, Taylormade driver

Hit a hole in one w/ the 7 iron on a 149 yr par 3 (huge drop, maybe 90 yrs). In the NC Mtns... total hacker, scorecard started 7-1-7. Finished w/ a 96.

I still suck, even with newer clubs.

My first set was mismatched 5,7,9 iron.
A sand wedge,
Putter
3 wood

Strangely, I actually had some decent scores as I learned the game.

Maybe 14 is too many choices for me.

Didn’t grow up learning the game; picked it up in my early 20s with a hand me down set of Wilson Reflex irons circa 1978 from my stepfather 3 thru SW. Also had a couple fairway woods that I don’t recall the manufacturer and a Voit Putter. Didn’t have a clue how to swing much less how to hold them so I just used a baseball style grip and swung as hard as I could. Broke the SW head off at the driving range, and cracked both driver and 3W shafts before looking into finding a better setup. Used them about 2yrs.

My uncle gave me a set of Ping Eye 2’s when I started to take the game more serious than hacking it around with my dumb arse friends in high school. I played a lot since I practically lived next to a golf course. Those were the best clubs ever but my uncle asked for them back which caught me somewhat off guard about my Freshman year of college. Saved enough after to buy me a set of Tommy Armour 845’s which was technically my very own first set of clubs.

I had some Ping Eye 2 irons that I borrowed to start. Those clubs will always have a special place in my heart.

Wilson staff goosenecks. Not bad clubs really especially for the $10 I paid for them at at the yard sale. No driver but did have an Orlimar tri metal that was like 7.5 degrees but it was a hybrid of sorts and a massive piece o shite. Me and a buddy had to pool our money to buy the cheapest putter that Kmart sold. It was like $8. Lol

A set of Knights from Wal-Mart for $100 back in 1998. I still use the 5 wood as a 5 hybrid type of club. I've since bought newer clubs but not sure if they have really helped at all or not.

Mizuno Silver Cup. D,3,5 persimmon woods and 3-PW blade irons. Ping Pal putter.

Gave them to my brother and they are no doubt long gone. Wish I still had them, especially the woods.
