Short game has come off the rails recently because the soggy turf has got me between the ears. Seems like I either chunk it or hit it thin out of fear of chunking it. Any drills or swing thoughts that help you guys?

What are you chipping with exactly? Bounce plays a huge part.

Typically 52 around the greens, 58 if short sided. Both have 8 deg bounce.

It definitely grabs you a little more if you are behind the ball too much. And in Louisiana it just never seems to dry from November to March. Have to commit to the shot. Can’t slow the club down. Ball first.

Or just putt

Also make sure you keep your eyes on the ball until it Leaves your club. Works well for me when I’m having issues

This certainly doesn’t help. You almost have no forgiveness in terms of the leading edge.

But if you love those clubs, the 52 is better even short sided. You want to keep the ball lower meaning further back in your stance keeping the hands forward. Don’t grip too hard. Weight on your left foot and run it to the hole. While it’s not the move to get you the closest necessarily, it’s a more forgiving shot in the soggy ground. Getting the ball in the air on such a wet, thin lie means an absolutely perfect strike. Tough for even the pros under those conditions.

When its wet, I’ll pitch with a PW. The more bounce the better

Don’t let the trail arm stall out. Grip down a little bit and keep those arms moving thru impact

This actually worked pretty well on the course today. Didn't hit any great chips but avoided disaster. Probably so anxious to see whether or not I've skulled it over the green that I've just been picking my eyes up.

So I always thought that bounce was for old guys and hacks who needed help getting the ball up in the air. After reading a little bit about it, I take a pretty steep approach h and would probably benefit from more bounce.

It’s usually simple fundamentals if you’ve played golf for any period of time.... amazing what watching the ball leave the club will do for your game

Play it in the back of your stance focus on contact. I find when I'm having issues with chipping it's often because I get a little quick, so I try to focus on tempo and making a good strike

This is intuitive to me as well and I think I tend to play the ball back when I am uncomfortable over a chip/pitch. But in light of the discussion about bounce, I think playing it back creates more forward shaft angle and effectively reduces the bounce makes the club more likely to dig in and result in a chunk.

So maybe not doing ourselves any favors playing it back?

This is why you have a club with high bounce and keep your hands forward through contact like your dragging or sweeping. As the club comes through it flattens out the sole of the club when your hands are forward. If you play it forward, even with low bounce, you are forcing yourself to pick it perfectly off of wet ground and are way more likely to thin it. Then, if you try to overcompensate with it forward, you are more likely to chunk it because of having to break your wrists eventually (this isn't a bunker shot).

Glad I am not the only one (misery loves company). Easily costs me three strokes a round in wet conditions and it’s about the only thing I am decent at in normal conditions.

Same way you hit chips against the grain on bermuda.

Place your hands higher at address bringing the heel of the club up off of the turf. Your swing will be an extended putter swing and you should hit the ball out towards the toe as that will be the only part of the club hitting the ground. The ball will come off low and have some top spin.

Honestly if i am chipping in a soupy lie I just play a bump and run with the PW. takes the second hinge out of the swing and makes it way less likely to blade it over the green on what shouldn't be a hard shot.

Bro, the only time I’ve ever taken a putter swing with a wedge is when I’m bellying a wedge for a ball that is backed up to the rough, or tapping in with a wedge after said belly wedge

Hit bump and run shots unless it is absolutely necessary to hit a pitch shot.

I use my pitching wedge whenever i can around the green now and my chipping has dramatically improved, so much easier than my 54
