re: Big Cedar Lodge - Negatiger1986
We stayed at Bass Pro hotel - it is basically a Hampton Inn type feel - comfortable but nothing special. Would look into other options. Highly recommend playing the 2 par 3 courses as well. Top of the rock may be their best course. It is away from the other course - we never figured out what bui...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
Now, apply your real life...
I agree with all this - I was just illustrating that the benefit of a 401k/IRA is in fact not the compounding interest but the tax implications - as you've laid out. But that's not what the other poster said. Also I'm not too optimistic about that retir...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
First of all - I now agree that the ROTH conversion is the much better option for the scenario I've described rather than trying to siphon project funds off the IRA. I will explore financing options including an SBLOC. I appreciate the comments and conversation. In response to your post specific...
Your securities backed loan is a good option to keep assets invested.and differ capital gains taxes.
Exactly. I think some are missing that the point of the debt isn't to spend money I don't have but to be smart about market timing ("average out" just like some would "average in") ...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
whole point of “tax deferred” investing is “compounding.”
Scenario 1: 100k is taxed at 25% and put into a taxable savings account. It earns 10% for 5 years. The value is (100*.75)*(1.1^5). Scenario 2: 100k is put in a tax deferred account. It earns 10% for 5 years. It is then ...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
I think this is a better idea. Thank you. To your point, I'm likely muddying the waters by tying these two things together. I'm looking at year end tax matters and the thought of the "tax arbitrage" you describe came to mind. Also top of mind is the home project we are likely to take on next year...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
No state income taxes Not committed. I just know this is a "bad idea" by conventional financial wisdom but it isn't so cut and dry to me. I just don't think 24% is a bad deal by historical tax rate standards and don't think it is materially higher than what I will pay in retirement. Yes I item...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
Ok, then I disagree with the logic. Random Internet Guy - 1 All other replies - 0
Don't understand this part. If you want to use numbers, let's say the withdrawal is $100k. If my project is $500k, at 5% interest and a pay-down goal of 7 years (84 months), that's $94K in total...

re: Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
Not really enough info... how much would the withdrawal be and how much is the projected interest with and without extra payments?
This is somewhat hypothetical. We plan to begin a home remodel next year and I plan to finance it through a securities-backed line of credit. I'm ballp...

Early IRA Withdrawal - Negatiger1986
My understanding is that an early IRA withdrawal is subject to income taxes plus a 10% penalty. This year our AGI will be in the 24% bracket with room to spare. Next year and into the future I expect to be in the 32+% tax bracket. I am considering early withdrawal from IRA in an amount that would pu...

re: High Income and Charity - Negatiger1986
We have 2 strong incomes and donate ~10% of our take home pay each year split evenly between our church, a local homeless mission, and a global medical mission. We do it for religious and moral reasons, but if I'm being honest, it feels pretty good to stiff the government. They essentially "match" $...

re: Is Lasik eye surgery worth it? - Negatiger1986
I did it a year ago and I'm not sure I would do it again. My eyes are dry all the time and while vision in one eye is perfect now, my vision in the other eye is a little off. Also the "starburst" effect from lights is significant. I think I just ended up in the unlucky ~5% who didn't get great resul...

re: 9000 unused oil leases. Inform me please. - Negatiger1986
A lot of leases may have been speculative - companies leased up acreage that they thought might be valuable before they drilled a lot of wells. May have turned out the acreage wasn’t as good as they thought, so the leases go undrilled and eventually expire. This is just one possible reason, in addit...

re: Schlumberger - Negatiger1986
Schlumberger provides services that are generally associated with drilling activity. You'd probably be better off trying to correlate rig counts to SLB's stock price. Oil prices are high right now because there hasn't been much drilling over the last 2 years. The E&P companies (XOM, CVX, etc) are cu...
