Some people don’t understand the economics of it. And they ALL want primo conditions for cheap. Can have one or the other, not both.

It's BREC's fault, blah, blah, blah.

He isn’t wrong about this. Brec plays a large part in golf courses having a tough time in the BR area. Why should anyone spend the time and money to go to the bluffs from BR when you could play Beaver Creek 25 minutes closer to BR? People expect golf to be cheap around BR because of brec.

But what is the volume on the courses Monday - Thursday? People pretend it is some vacuum. They charge $X in Dallas vs $Y in Baton Rouge and it is better.

If a golf course in BR Area is dead Mon-Thursday and all Winter then you cannot compare it even if they charge same green fees.

Plus, how long can the rate be held? Is it all day? Many courses in other states can maintain rates more steady throughout the day. In Louisiana, courses are giving golf away in afternoons.

Golf is dead a lot in BR Area. Travel Sports, LSU Games, Hunting and Fishing all come first, for instance. Also, golfers are fair weather golfers here and people pretend we have S Florida weather when we do not.

So, when you discuss rates, you have to discuss # of rounds per year and how long rates can be held throughout the day. Otherwise you cannot have an honest conversation.

BR Golf is cheap. Gets even cheaper at off times (like ridiculously cheap) and is completely dead if anything else is going on or weather is bad/cold.

Travel sports, college football, hunting, etc..are all big in the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, etc…and all of those states are very active with golfers and thriving courses.

Look at the investment Alabama made years ago with the RTJ courses. Huge economic boom for the state.

For some odd reason, aside from private courses, the urge to maintain and build golf courses in Louisiana was never a priority for some reason.

There was an urge to build but not an urge to maintain. Fault of both builders and customers.

But, you also have to consider number of courses per person in an area and then layer on average income.

Louisiana has a huge demographics problem with its brain drain and white collar drain.

I’d like to see those stats for a huge economic boom.
It gets good press and the courses are very nice. But without tax money, those courses fold, just like here. There is no way in hell they can make money on golfers alone and keep that product. Will. Not. Happen.

Good cheap golf everywhere else?
Where?
Tell me the course and how it’s run. Who owns it? Who pays for it?
You’re telling me there aren’t courses closing in the Carolinas and Georgia? There aren’t courses closing in North Texas?
You can always find an example now (maybe not later) that is debunking the myth that golf is not a profitable business and this course stays primo 24/7. Give it time.

I think golf is a dying sport. It's expensive. Time consuming. Difficult. Takes time away from the use of cellphones and video games. The opposite of the I want it all and I want it now mindset. I played golf and live on a course. If I want to nap I put the tv on a golf match. If you have a tax supported course in the same area as a private course, especially a maintenance difficult course like the bluffs, there is no way they can compete. I hate it. But I quit after playing 35+ years because I'd rather spend my time swimming for exercise and playing my guitar and doing yard work and all the other things 5+ hours and green fees allow. But it is what it is. But I hate it.

I thought so too but several people not even that long ago said there was a resurgence due to Covid pandemic and courses being packed and 6 hour rounds being common. Is this no longer the case?

Not to mention, TopGolf is extremely popular and always busy in most US cities.

Top Golf is not golf in any way shape or form. It’s going out. Like a bar, movie or even a concert. It’s quick entertainment.
Golf is far from that. It got popular at the front of Covid because the pandemic was new and options were limited. That’s all gone. Normal is back and with that, golf is unpopular again.
Golf is no different than any other businesss or product….you pay more, you get more.
