They are always the slowest and most entitled groups out there, and in general a pain in the arse to deal with.
I just learned last week that I get one at Links

The last time I played there, the back nine was closed for some reason. It was a clusterfrick. Left after 7 holes.

I’m old, probably play faster than you, almost assuredly will take your money on the course.
As to why I deserve the discount, I fricking earned it.

Do private golf courses charge a senior rate or is it just public courses?
If only public, I don't understand the gripe. Publicly owned courses are there to help the nearby community and giving older people a little encouragement to go out and get some exercise rather than chill in the recliner eating potato chips is a benefit to the community.
Hell, if you are talking about Brec parks specifically, if you pre-pay you are already getting a cheaper rate than the senior rate.

I walk and my natural pace is 1:45 per 9 Holes/3:30 for 18. Anything within the 2 hours 9/4 hours 18 is perfectly acceptable pace of play. 2.5 hours for 18? What's the rush? Do you not enjoy golf? Is there some time bonus to your scorecard I am unaware of?
Something just as annoying as being stuck behind a slow group is having a group behind you constantly breathing down your neck when you are playing at a reasonable pace and keeping up with the group in front of you. People that do that I politely let play through...so they can then wait for the group in front of me.
So for the speed golfers here, ever stop to think you are just as annoying as slow players out on the course?

As to the topic at hand, Senior Citizen rates. I find it ironic that the generation that controls the most wealth in this country also think they should get a discount for goods and services.
The fixed income thing is really ironic. You mean Social Security doesn't have a COLA every year? Oh, it does. So I can just go into my boss and demand a raise? Like my earnings are elastic, I can just make more whenever I want.
Especially ironic in those years when Soc Sec gets those COLA adjustments and the working public gets stuck with wage freezes due to a recession or some crap.
It's like when my Dad brags about getting a senior discount to me, which he doesn't anymore because he'll get a cross look. Look at your McMansion house, your stock portfolio, your land assets, your vacations you take, and you are seriously going to tell me you should get a discount?
Frick all that

It’s normally only public courses. And most only do it on weekdays to drive revenue during non peak time.

When I first started playing(mid 30's), I sometimes would play with a group of seniors(+65) at Baton Rouge City Park. These 4 guys would play ready golf and didn't mess around. All 5 of us had to be on the tee box with a glove on, ball, and tee in your hand or they would come unglued. When one hit, the ball would be on the tee before the ball hit the ground. They thought me how to play fast and steady. The 3 guys I play with now would never come close to playing a round as fast as these guys did. Have to sit in the cart, playing on phone, no ball or tee, etc.

K, baw.
I guess I shouldn’t have brought up the slow play thing. It’s more of a stereotypical thing I notice but could be wrong and obviously doesn’t apply to everyone.
My main gripe is to why the generation that holds the most wealth in the country that is already subsidized through social security feels entitled to a discount bc they’re old. It makes 0 sense to me. The same group will complain about food stamps or social programs regularly while demanding their subsidy
I agree in general with some of the points about encouraging exercise for the community or whatever but that shouldn’t just be for old people.

Who says we feel like we are entitled, you? We earned it, and social security was deducted from our pay check, every pay period. It is our money period! Are you really this stupid? Yes I think you are. I doubt, with your attitude, you'll survive long enough to earn anything.

I’ve been working since I was 12. People like me BUILT everything you take for granted. Which we understood and appreciated what our parents and grandparents built and left to us.
Subsidized through Social Security? That’s OUR MONEY that we paid in for decades. It’s not a goddamn handout we haven’t paid for (taken against our will mostly)

That's probably the most out of touch thing said in this thread.
The SS COLA doesn't do squat when you consider that Medicare costs goes up every year. Then you have increases in the secondary insurance as well.
While I did well in my working career, I don't back up getting my SS deposit every month. It's money that I earned and could have made more if I was allowed to invest that money myself.
I tell people all the time, It was just yesterday that I was 25....
I guarantee that you won't turn down your SS when the time comes.

Our club has a “young professional” under 40 membership.
Before Covid, you’d see these guys on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Maybe getting 9 in during the week one afternoon/evening.
They were coaching various kids sports, making a living, run kids to practice or activity. Very busy.
Covid hit. Only thing to do was golf. These guys have carved out at least a full day and an afternoon during the week now to play golf. The rounds played at our club is incredible.
Home school kids that play golf, play all the time. Some are elite juniors. I’ve played with them. These kids make a 9 of 2 or 3 under look routine. They play and practice daily.
The seniors mostly play before 10 am.
In general, they are fairly quick bc most ride and they play team games where they are not plumbobbing every 4 footer for bogey. They fly around the course.
I play with people from 8 to 92. I’ve played every tee. Golf is fun. Some players are more deliberate than others. There is a scratch group that is very slow, but I played with them one day. It was fine. Good guys. 66,69,72, and my 79!
Golf takes time. Playing up people’s arse is rude. We let singles or twosomes through routinely. I’ve played through, but most of the time I just try to keep up. With the seniors, 3 hours is normal. With the guys I walk with it’s about 3.5 to 4 hours depending on crowd. Club events can take 4-5 hours depending on format and field.

I' m sure won't turn Soc Sec down. I've paid into it my entire life too. I'm 50. You think it's just some youngsters giving you crap.
Yeah, yeah, you're Medicare costs go up to offset your COLA adjustment. Cry me an F'ing river. When your Medicare premiums go up, what do you think is happening to working people's health insurance premiums? Exactly. And disproportionately higher too.
This has gotten way off topic but had to be responded to.

It's safe to say that some courses take more time than others.
I walk my course Greatwood one time years ago and thought my legs were going to fall off.
From #3 green to #4 tee box at least 300 yds.
#16 green to #17 tee at least 300yds
#9 green. to #10 tee at least 600 yds.
#4 green to #5 tee at least 120 yds.

Played the front 9 this morning, walking, keeping ahead of a single in a cart behind me, in 1:36.
On 13, I let him play through because it's one of those holes with a long walk between tees and he motored up to me in his cart.
Back nine I played in 2:04, but the back has three holes with very long walks between tees due to the bluff breaking the course in two. Still, 46 front, 42 back.
I prefer to slow down a bit and 2 hours per 9 steady is just fine. It's not a race.

Yeah y’all earned social security and y’all are finna bankrupt it just like you have this country
The only thing your generation built is an unsustainable system that’s compromised future generations for present day profitability
Congrats on your $10 discount at the local muni. You earned it
