No one actually likes Santa Maria. It’s just a good location and open to the public.

Of all the affordable country clubs Baton Rouge use to have, Santa Maria was the worst, but somehow it’s the only one still in existence.

I don’t think Santa Maria ever made it to country club status. They went bankrupt before they opened and BREC bought it very cheap.

You must be Tiger Woods. Anyone that says 5, 11, 13 and 16 are easy driving holes must be on the PGA tour.

I meant 6 and 7 not 5 and 6. 13 is wide open outside of that shoot. Anyone hitting those trees isn’t keeping it on the planner on any hole. 16 is a very easy tee shot if you don’t try to cut the corner. Tons of space out there.

For me who is a 20 handicap, 2, 5, 11, 12, 14 and 16 give me the most trouble. I don’t have much of any trouble with 13.

I need to get out to Beaver more. The traffic at Santa Maria makes it a nightmare.
For some reason I’ve never played copper! Should I start going there some?

Yes. They just finished a bunker renovation that really made it nice out there. The new sod will still need to grow in around the spots that they shrunk the bunkers, but the greens are rolling great. Fun layout and relatively easy to get on.

Not any time in the past year or so. Praying this summer they can get it back rolling but I suspect it’ll take a few growing seasons at the least, and that plus tons of money and Reno at the most.

Played CCL a few weeks ago and thought the greens were in very good shape. I was surprised because I heard they were the worst greens in the city last fall.

Interesting. I’ve sworn it off for while considering what I saw a few months ago. Seemed like they just patched them and it was a mess at the time. Are they now like mostly carpet and you can’t see the sod blocks or is it just decent? I’ll be happy as hell if they’re back cause that’s the best layout in BR.

Depends on what kind of ranking. Every prestigious club in the state is going through or has gone through a renovation within the last 5 years and over the next 3 years. Those renovations will give those clubs top conditions to add to their prestige.

Most courses in our area do not have that WoW factor that you get from ocean courses and mountain courses. The only two were Squire and The Bluffs. Holes stand out on those courses years after you play.

Going by sheer enjoyment of course layout and average to great conditions:

BRCC - wont blow you away with hole layout but everything from tee boxes to collars to greens to under trees are in top notch shape.

CCL - Looking forward to a full renovation. Layout is better than BRCC but conditions to battle BRCC are not there Yet.

Santa Maria - Layout is great. Spread out. Makes you hit all kinds of shots. Conditions not great but above average through year.

UClub - Layout is great. Conditions always above average to great. Just hard and not very enjoyable for most but a challenge.

From there I think you can group others.

Pelican Point after new bunkers and greens will be top notch to add to the fun easy layout. Beaver can be put here with the layout and above average shape year round. Copper with new bunkers and greens may be here too with their fun layout.

Greystone and The Island have some inconsistencies but for the most part are in good to great shape. Both challenging courses.

The rest.

Nothing wrong with that list. It’s a very subjective topic. Some people put layout and difficulty at the top; other might put conditions and exclusivity up there. Going out of area and staying in the state, I don’t see how anyone can’t put Squire first. One of the best layouts. Best conditioned. Great practice and clubhouse areas. Great challenges from the back but you could make it much easier just a few tees up. Hell, even the membership for people in BR is reasonable.

Definitely Squire #1 looking outside the area.

The same drainage ditch runs through both of them. Just one is covered.

Wards creek bisects Webb. It doesn’t run through BRCC. It does flow SE along Santa Maria and ends at hole 3 at Bayou Manchac.

Pelican Point is not a good
Course. CCL being a neighborhood development course really doesn’t have it in the same stratosphere as any old club in the state. I’d take the likes of a BRCC NOCC MCC every day of the week over it. I just prefer courses that stand alone and don’t have houses on pretty much every hole. BRCC is also about to blow up the entire course and do a major renovation and probably be up there with Metairie, Squire (overrated btw) for the number one course in the state
