Interesting concept here...

quote:

That’s right, in an extreme effort to combat slow play, players will pick up when facing a par putt. Further, as soon as a player doesn’t achieve par, he’ll pocket his ball…even if he hasn’t made it to the green.

“It won’t just be that par doesn’t count. The players will be banned from putting out once they haven’t made a birdie,” Chandler told Huggan. “That way they will all be round in three hours. We will have two points for a birdie, five for an eagle and eight for an albatross. That’s been done before. But no putting for par, which counts as zero. So you can’t knock it out of a bunker to four-feet and putt for par. Not allowed. And that’s where things will speed up.”

“Everybody is in with a chance right to the end,” Chandler says. “That might all turn out wrong. But it could also be really exciting. We’ll see. We’re not changing the game that much. We’re just making it quicker and getting rid of the dull bits. No one really gives a bleep about eight-footers for par.”

Is pace of place really a problem for pros right now? Are golf ratings for the big 4 not increasing? Attendance is high and steady? What problem is being fixed here?

As for ams, I could see picking up after a double being a group/course rule. Most people with a HC, aren't supposed to count triples anyway.

Nope. Stagnant at best.

This would completely change the way golf is played. Not a fan

As someone who blows their round routinely with a big number, I'd be all in favor

I still don't understand why pace of play is such a big freaking deal. Granted, I don't want a 5 hour round but 4 hours should be expected esp on a weekend or if you have a 4some.

Seems like it could have the reverse effect down the stretch. You couldn't (realistically) have multiple 2 shot swings on par 3's or 4's.

I don't know about most of you guys but when I get to 17 or 18 I really don't want my round to be over... I'd rather it last another hour or more.

Agreed. I think this would be a fun tournament to watch once a year or something like that, but let's not pretend that a player being able to essentially pick up because they hit a ball OB or in a hazard (hell, if they just miss a green and get an unlucky lie) doesn't significantly change the game. The point of stroke play is to see how few strokes you can play all 18 holes (or 72 in a PGA Tour event), not how few strokes you can play each hole.

One way to make them faster is to put a time limit on how long they can talk to their caddy upon arrival to the ball.

So it’s basically the stableford system? Just no points for a par.

It's a modified stableford. There are no negative points either. It would basically be a go for broke birdie fest. Imagine a tour event being like we play a scramble when par is your friend. I think it would be really fun to watch.
