Playing Carter Plantation this weekend

First time. Any tips?

Tight. Not a driver-every-hole kind of course. Use your range finder to pick good landing zones with your tee shots. It's been dry for a few days now so that's a plus. I've always found that it never drained very well and would stay wet for DAYS after a good rain. Conditions should be really nice.

Keep it below the hole. Greens break more than they look and are usually pretty fast.
If you aren’t accurate off the tee, hit your straightest club instead.
Over any of the greens is trouble (especially #5)

Played this past weekend and the greens were punched and the tee boxes were rough. Great other than that

Don't play the gold 1-ups just because thats what everyone else does. Picking the best tee box for your distance and handicap can be the difference from a fun round and a frustrating grind.
If you're above say a 12 or 13 index, play the gold blue combo or just the blues and enjoy the day .

Update: Played Saturday. The course wasn't terribly slow, about a 4:25 round. Really a pretty good course. The greens were punched what looks like about two weeks ago so they were letting the grass grow a little bit so the putting was rough but I will definitely be back in the fall to play again.
This might deserve it's own thread but does anyone know how much the course has changed from the original Toms design? I don't like how 17 and 18 both take the driver out your hands. I think 18 should be a driver hole on every course. I have the same criticism of The Bridges because the last two times I played they were having the course start on 10 and 9 is a layup par 4 (almost identical to 17 at Carter).

Why do you think that? I'd rather the architect build the best holes they can without needing to fit a ton of predefined criteria. With modern American golf, there are already a ton of them:
9 and 10 must be near the clubhouse

No back to back par 5s or par 3s

The same reason Hole 1 is never a par 3. You should start and finish with driver in hand. However, I really don't disagree with you that's why I was curious about the history of the changes made to the course from the original design. Carter was built with a completely empty slate many years ago and I believe they have changed the course to make it shorter and removed trees to accommodate more house lots.

They reversed the 9’s.
Also I hit driver on 17 if wind is right. Always hit driver on 18. I play the tips or one ups depending on the group.

The original design was flipped about 7 or 8 years to allow a clubhouse stop at the turn. (1 was previously 10). The course flowed much better with the original design IMO. Not sure what tees you played but 18 is most certainly considered a driver hole from the tips or 1 ups for most players. The entire left side of that hole used to be tree lined which was primarily taken down by Ida and what was left was just razed. Was a much better looking and interesting finish hole before that.

Hmmmmm. A Saturday round 4:25. Just exactly average. This blows all the 6 hour/all day/pack a lunch imbeciles away.

If you play from the tips and can drive 275 hit 3 wood ALOT or you’ll be in fairway bunkers all day. If you play one up from tips hit hybrid or long irons off the tee. Course is phenomenal right now. Greens fast as hell.

Two years ago Carter was well maintained and terrific
Now? The bunkers are shite. The fairways aren’t cut, the tee boxes are sandy and the greens have crab grass growing in them.
It’s a damn shame too because the course layout is challenging and fun.
