I know people love to hate on everything new in golf, but I am excited about this. They can knock it out of the park by having the matchplay at some great courses on the west coast.

I know arguments will be made that they play stroke all season and then have match play determine the champion. My argument for that is nobody gives a shite about how it is done now. So, changing it to match play doesn't change up some revered format and tarnish how a champion is crowned. Nobody is going to argue that Adam Scott is the Champion of the PGA Tour if he happens to win this weekend. So, nobody will argue that the winner of the match play is the best golfer of the year. ETA: I actually reread the tweet and see that they already will have crowned a season long winner. So, they are addressing this anyway. Great. I do wonder why 90 guys are included in the finale when I imagine it will be virtually impossible for #90 to get to #32.

I am a bit confused by the last part about the four rounds determining the final standings. I assume that means for all but the final 2, but it still doesn't make much sense as it is written.

They are floating Sleepy Hollow and LACC as the hosts, which would be elite

Sleep Hollow for the group stages and LACC for the knockout would be great.

I am interested in how they handle the players eliminated already to make their matches interesting to the viewer.

I think it might be better the other way around. I could see those guys going really low at Sleepy, which would be fun for match play, while LACC would probably be a better stroke play venue.

Either way, they would need to stretch Sleepy out significantly for a tour event.

I don't think any of the 2 week 32 player event is stroke. It's 4 rounds of group play followed by 4 rounds of knockout. The 90 man finale will be stroke but I don't think that is what the poster was referring to for Sleepy Hollow and LACC.

This might be me looking into it too much, but I wonder how having 2 weeks of matchplay will impact the team competitions that will follow these events.

- Will it make the players more dialed for the Ryder and President's Cups?
- Will the viewers not be as excited for the team competitions since they just watched the best players compete in match play a few weeks earlier?
- Will this just become match play season and be something everyone is excited about as a whole?

I think the format itself is great. There should me more matchplay. That is one of the reasons the Euros are better at the Ryder Cup...more matchplay experience.

My concern is still the extremely limited schedule leading into it. What good is a playoff if the rest of the season is the 4 majors and only a small handful of other events?

They are still planning for 24 or so events before the playoffs. So, taking out the major and Ryder Cup (I have no idea why that is included in the notes), you still have 19. That's 19 over the course of 6-7 months. That's 2-3 a month. Seems like plenty to me.

The current format sucks. They keep tweaking on it and it doesn't work.

At least they are trying to make it better.

If they give this a go and it sucks so be it, try something else. But initially I like the idea of it.

When did they change? The last they discussed this it was the 4 majors, the Players, the Tour Ch (which I'm assuming these 2 events replaces the Tour Ch) and 10-12 other events. That's a total of 15-17 leading into the playoff. And that's if you can organize a bunch of new events after throwing a bunch of sponsors under the bus and throwing most of your current events into secondary status and trying to replace them with brand new tournaments you organize yourself based solely on market size.

Looks like I was mistaken. Gemini made it seem like the playoffs was not included in the total, but it appears that it is:

quote:

The new system begins at the top, with the PGA TOUR Championship Series offering a consistent schedule of playing opportunities for the best players in the world. It will feature approximately 23-24 events, inclusive of THE PLAYERS Championship, the majors and international team events (Presidents Cup, Ryder Cup), with the season running approximately February to August.

The PGA TOUR has already lined up an initial set of 10 of its expected 15 PGA TOUR Championship Series regular season events for 2028. The remaining events will either be filled by existing events or new markets under consideration, such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
