My brother is getting back in to golf after a long time off. He is currently hitting a Taylor Made bubble burner driver and Adams tight lies 3 wood. He wants to spend around $500. I looked on Callaway pre-owned and found an epic speed driver and 3-wood for $440 plus tax. Are these decent? Any other ideas?

He played for the first time in years and shot 106. I am setting him up with some lessons, and he is a good athlete. He would shoot in the mid to high eighties before he quit, and I would expect him to get back there or better.

I still rock a Sim2 3 wood which can be had for a reasonable price on 2nd swing.

The ping 425 series was also money in the wood department. If you can't hit the fairway with a g425 max then you have a swing flaw.

Yes, those are very good.

I don't think a bad club has been made in a long time. Anything from the last few years will be great. Hell, I still play the original TEE 3 and 4 woods and don't feel like I am missing anything.

The M series from TM is outstanding, and he could go all the way back to M2 and have a fantastic driver. 3 woods are going to come down to look at address, as they are all going to be outstanding.

Absolutely.. should be able to get a decent Dr and 3/5w from 2nd swing for around 500ish.. Or check a local golf shop like Edwin Watts.. I picked up a barely used Paradym for 399 a couple months back

Where are you located? You should go try the used racks or demo clubs from Dicks/Golf Galaxy or your local shop.

You must find better deals there than I. I have been in there a bit trying to dig up deals and every single time I can find the same used club on callaway pre-owned at a better price, sometimes significantly better.

I really lucked out honestly.. I happened to pop in to pick up some balls and a couple gloves and was walking by the used bin happened to notice it sitting their and looking a bit out of place.. picked it up and it was marked 399.. I then picked up one of the Rogue's they had in their and they were 399.. figured it has to be a accident and went and asked Mr Paul if that was accurate and he said yep.. So I bought immediately.. was I in need of a new driver... Nope... But was I going to let that get away... Also nope..

Yea that's lucky. Numerous times I have grabbed clubs out of the used bin and asked if they forgot to mark the club down. I could find the same club brand new online for less than the "demo - used" price.

I'd get the Epics from CPO. Maybe see if Rogues fit into your price point. I play Maveriks and love them.

Only other thing I'd suggest is going to the Cobra site for an LTDX driver. Those are $299 right now. That's a solid driver.
