This is the most frustrating thing I have encountered in 35 years of golf. I really think I know what to do, yet am powerless to actually do it on a regular basis. I am so desperate I am considering just going to Stack and tilt. Drills? Aids? Thought?

High handicapper here. I find it helps if I go to the range and set a tee above my ball and concentrate on taking my divot past the tee. Swing easy until I have the feeling locked in and then push the speed until I’m up to a normal swing.

Stack and tilt. Drills

I had no clue what this was. After a quick look, it's exactly what I do.

I get my weight on my lead leg, forward press, and let it rip

What is your head movement like? I find that if I move my head at all in my swing, I don't strike the ball the way I want.

Kinda a hard question to answer without seeing the swing but head movement is one of my big determinants in how I strike the ball.

Good luck! I have tried for 30 years to get my divot forward and never succeeded. I have accepted that I will always be a "picker".

Whenever I have tried moving the ball back in my stance my divot just moves back with it. I have tried stack and tilt and other things too. I think my issue may be from "casting" with my wrists/hands but who knows. I can't afford proper lessons to get it proper fixed anyway.

instead of looking at the ball try staring at the grass 1-2 inches in front of the ball. may sound dumb but sometimes it helps me.

Usually the opposite of what would make sense. You’re probably standing up a little in transition and throwing the club. Hard to have consistent low point control when you’re doing that.

Straight to draw. Divots reveal a severe in to out path. Working on that too.

This is what I was looking for. Try for a more neutral path. I am willing to bet the club is too far behind you. Take a hoola hoop to represent the the swing path. Make the hoola hoop be perfectly straight down the line and notice where the hoop touches the ground. Now take the hoop and turn it to represent a in to out path. You will notice the hoop bottoms out farther back.

I have to focus in front of ball and just swing.

When I look at the ball, I think I try to land the club at the ball. Focusing on front of the ball will move low point forward.

Good video on YouTube from Ali Taylor

No doubt. Bigger issue though, I think, is getting to left side.

There’s a training aid called the Tour Striker that’s supposed to be pretty good for this.

Try leaving your hands totally passive throughout the swing. There's a good chance you are scooping or manipulating the club. Tip is from a Pennsylvania amateur champ from back in the day.

It's very good. I sold mine years ago to get the "tour". It's too severe.

Nick Taylor, Seguto Golf and ayumihori golf are great Stack and Tilt instructors to watch.

I've only been playing for about 4 years, and I'm a "picker" as well. I was told that you lose distance picking versus driving the ball down through the ground first. Is that common knowledge? If so, what kind of distance difference is their typically?

Yes, it is a compression thing. However, Tom Watson did okay as a picker.
