How often do you change up the tees you play?

Being a member at a course or playing one course more than any other can get monotonous if you play the same distances every time. How often do you change it up? Have you ever completely tipped things out? I’m talking ignore the tee markers and take one step forward from the back and tee up there. What about playing the course as short as possible? Going for nearly every par 4 and maybe even a couple par 5s? Seeing how close you can get it when every par 3 is under 100? I’ve been thinking about how to keep things interesting and wondering if anyone else has tried these.

I play the tips at our CC or one set up. Games help keep things relatively fresh but I've played a couple of rounds with my 3H, 5, 7, 9, G, and 58 with a putter as well. Pretty challenging and fun honestly. We also will play 9 holes with our group (in two man teams, scrambling) with 7 irons and putters only. I've never played from the front sets - might give that a try one day

You bring up a good point. Some holes can be more fun short, some a little long, etc. Just playing the championship tees or white tees doesn’t allow you to play each hole in an interesting way.
A short four with heavy penalties for bad shots can be more fun than a longer four where you hit driver and the same iron every time.
Playing a long par five from the white tees is like playing an entirely different hole especially if the tee shot is more difficult.
Hitting a great tee shot allowing you to hit a long iron into a five is fun.

Played the gold tees (5700-ish yards) at Joe Bart with a buddy and his 80-something dad a few weeks ago. It’s was fun feeling like DJ hitting 8 iron into a couple par 5s.

In high school we’d play as far back on every tee box as possible. The super was always pissed about the divots on the “championship” tees they rarely used.

When I worked at a golf course and was playing the same course a bunch, we never mixed it up. The group of guys I played with were all single digits, so our typical was one step off the back of the back box. I never got the desire to mix it up because there was always a game or competition to keep it interesting. Sometimes we would, but not normally. We would, however, play a lot of cross country holes after we closed. That was always fun. I haven't done it in a decade, but if you lay up short of the green on 8 at Carter, I'm fairly certain I can still pick out the tree you have to hit an iron over to get to 6 green. Play down 13 from the ladies tees to 17 green.

I think it is also course dependant. If sliding up a tee or two makes a par 5 with an island ish green gettable in two, I'd have no problem sliding it up. If it makes the hole more interesting, absolutely. Moving up and hitting wedges at every hole or taking less than driver off the tee, I think I'd be out. I just don't play enough. Maybe if I was playing a couple times a week, I would.

I don’t. I always play from the back tees. If the course is under 7k i usually play the absolute tips. Maybe I should try this but i do play a handful of courses so things don’t stay so monotonous for me.

I change it up a few different ways

Sometimes I like to top a drive about 75 yards to leave me a really long approach shot

Other times I like to play my second shot (and sometimes subsequent shots) from trees and other fairways.

It keeps it fun and more exciting than striping drives 300+ yard to the middle of the fairway and being a wedge away from the pin.

I would hate that.

I also like to play either a two-ball scramble on my own or play a worst-ball two-ball scramble on my own.

Fun way to mix it up as well. Two-man scramble really frees you up to see what your potential might be on a particular course and the worst-ball game makes you really focus on every shot and improve consistency.

When I was a teaching pro, we played one foot in the rough off the back tee box or two ball worst ball.

I always play the farthest back tees. On every course. Sometimes ill even back it up to the back cut of the tee box to be obnoxious if i'm playing with a douche or if the cart girl is around.

There was a steep money game I knew of as a kid at our CC. They played all par 4s from 400 yards par 5s from black 550+ and par 3s from lady tees.

In highschool we would walk just a few feet off a green and tee off to the next hole vs walking to the tee box. Plenty of times you see a better setup for the hole no where close to a tee box so tee of from there, create your own tee box.

This year I have played blue, mixed blue/white, white, mixed white/gold, and gold.

I’ve thought about just creating a course of mixed blue, white, and gold.

Also we played a made up hole from 6 tee to 7 green, but the course is a neighborhood course so it’s not conducive to playing from one tee to another green.

I’ve thought about playing the par 3s back and the par 5s way up(making them novel par 4s).

Some of the kids tees on par 4s make for a challenging par 3.

Do this and play two par 5a as 4s and then it’s par 70. 480-510 par 4s will make you stay in the gym for another set.

Mix it up. One thing we used to do was whoever wins the hole picks next tee box. Par 4s from ladies tees are fun. Making long holes longer and short holes shorter can really change the way you see the course.

I always thought teeing up on three at City Park in BR and playing the fourth green would have been a very tough par five. The second shot would be over the RR tracks. It may have been a little long, but you could play ftom the ladies tee.

Would be a 3 shot hole from most tees. He'll, it's a two shot hole from 4 tee.
