I run into situations somewhat often where I'm behind a small tree (very close to the tree) near the green, where my 60 degree wouldn't quite clear it (unless I open the face and thin the shite out of it to the right). Pretty much in a position where I have to try to punch below the tree, and inevitably frick that up. I decided to purchase a 72 degree for these rare occasions today. Am I an idiot?

I couldn’t imagine hitting a club more straight up than I do when my 60 is wide open. 72 seems widely unnecessary unless you have skills like Phil

58° is all I need.

72° seems like a novelty club.

You can open the face with anything 56° and up and create that extra loft if needed.

I used to play with a 64° solely for bunkers bc i wasn't confident opening the face up. But it's not hard to learn. Just gotta practice and get some confidence.

I don't want to call you an idiot but let's just say you're going to an unnecessary extreme. That would be like carrying a left handed club that you might use 3 times a year.

Get someone qualified to show you how to open up that 60 and hit it on the proper path and plane.

58 is the highest for me.

I think I'd hurt myself with a 72.

Wise words. I love my 60 but I definitely have a consistent issue when I try to open it up, unless I'm in a bunker. It seems like I send a screamer low and right about 25% of the time.

After the lessons, get fitted!

See if a 72 degree wedge fills a gap.
You might need a 76 if the monitor says that.

Seriously, I would not carry anything beyond 60 degree. I’ve even though of carrying just through 55 since I’m not powerful. Not sure I could hit a 72 thirty yards!

I truly believe this was a waste of your money. There’s maybe a handful of players in the world that would actually find a need for a club like that. My highest wedge is 58 and i never ever hit that thing full. 30 yards and in. Opening up the blade on that works wonders for majority of all chip or flop shots i require. Keep us posted on how many whiffed shots you hit out of thick rough but i do hope it works out for you.

58* is my tops. Had a 60* at one time years ago. Don't see much use for a 72 unless every green is 10' high and you always miss them.

A 72 is going to cause you more headache than it’s worth. I have no idea why you would need a club like that.

58 is the highest I carry and if I open the face I can hit it straight in the air.

I had an old 60* that I bent to 64*. I found one decent use for it in 8 rounds, and probably could have easily just opened the 60* wide open and been fine. You only get 14 clubs, don't waste one, imo.

I currently carry a 60 that I use basically everywhere inside of 60 yards or so and rarely, if ever, swing it full.

I don’t understand hitting something with an open face

Wouldn’t you just thin the piss out of it?

60 for me. I stupidly bought a cheap 64 degree on one of those infomercials years ago. I couldn’t hit that thing to save my life and I feel pretty confident with my 60. It’s just way too much loft for me.

If you dont make good contact, yes. But if you do it enough in practice, you understand how to hit the shot.

Another trick is to let the club out race your hands in a borderline casting motion at the bottom. This increases the loft even more.

Only if you open the club face too much. There are limits on how much you should open the club face depending on what your club's bounce/loft is. I personally rarely open my club face and just hit my 60 straight up which is usually plenty enough loft for any course around here.
