Help planning a golf trip to Scotland

I am in the early stages of planning a golf trip to Scotland with some friends. As of right now, we know we are going to play The Old Course at St. Andrews, but after that, we are not sure where to play. I think we will be able to swing 3 more rounds while we are there. We are hoping to catch the top courses in the area within a 2-hour drive. Does anyone have any recommendations for courses to play? Also, is there a service that can handle planning tee times and transportation for us? that would be the ideal situation.

There are about six great courses in that area. I think they are just south of St Andrew's. The "New" course at St Andrew's is pretty good as well. It's only 100 years old, put new in their book.

Also not sure how serious they are at enforcement but many courses have a handicap minimum. Usually low 30's but you have to have a verifiable handicap.
How are you sure you are getting on old course isn't the easiest course to get on and getting advance reservation is not easy if even possible depending on when you go.

There are travel services that will handle all of that for you. You tell them where you want to play & they make it work. A quick Google search will work for this.

I'm hopefully going in September of 2024 and I'm trying to figure things out as well.
My three I'm going to try and play are The Old Course, Royal Dornoch and Trump Turnberry Aliza. The Old Course sounds like an absolute pain in the arse to get on to play. You have to have your reservations, get there at like 4 AM and hope your name is called. There is no guarantee you can play even if you try and book a year in advance, most likely it's just the luck of the draw that morning. But to play at St Andrews, I'd get up at anytime, it's worth it.
I'd love to find a travel agency too as far as the best way to travel and where to stay as well. Typically just leave that up to my wife though.

Muirfield is about 1.5 hour drive from St. Andrews. You can also take a ferry.

Check out the Scottish Golf Podcast and maybe reach out to Ru Macdonald; he can offer great tips for getting on at tough courses.

When playing at the Old Course, do you have to walk the entire course? Or do they have carts?

Walk with a caddie. Caddie fee is added to the green fee if I'm not mistaken. Add the caddie tip in and it's an expensive round.

I have been to Scotland five times since 2010 and a member at Fortrose & Rosemarkie north of Inverness. I can give you a couple of names to help you handle things or give you some pointers if you want to try to do much on your own (save a shitload of money). Still expensive. Last time I played Old Course was 2018 and I found a local who booked a time for me and two others and played with him. We “tipped” him $60£ each on top of the green fee. Still cheaper than having to stay at Old Course Hotel to guarantee a time.
Also know, it is busy as hell for golf in Scotland right now and in the foreseeable future. I was there at the end of June and the courses I played this last trip are already booked up for 2023.

Haversham and Baker is a golf travel agency. They have access to all courses, even St Andrews, with confirmed tee times. They can make your hotel reservations (bed and breakfasts) near the courses, and have drivers for you, van or bus. If you want to play Royal Dornouch (great course), it is a long drive from St Andrews (6 hours) Uber used them twice. Great service!
