Help my golf group decide where to play… Birmingham area or Tampa area?
We normally do Vegas in the fall but we are canceling this year… We have Narrowed down our choices to flying into Birmingham or Tampa… Please recommend some courses to play in either of those locations… We have looked at Streamsong outside of Tampa. We know there are some RTJ Courses in Bama but I haven't research what is near Birmingham… Thoughts?

I would recommend Myrtle Beach in early November. Consequentially, LSU has a bye Nov 6 weekend. You should skip the needless killing of animals and go play there instead. The SJW would love you for it.

Well I could recommend the Kerrville, TX area that weekend… I could kill a buck in the morning and then sleigh river hill that afternoon… Two birds with one stone

Never done Birmingham but streamsong was awesome when I went. Three great courses. Haven’t done anything else in the Tampa area but I’m sure innisbrook is top notch

From what I’ve researched the four courses mentioned seem better than anything bham has to offer.

Another suggestion that we just did would be Scottsdale. If you guys usually enjoy Vegas then Scottsdale offers a lot of the same extracurriculars with way more golf

If you come to B'ham you need to find time to drive down to FarmLinks in Sylacauga. Probably the best public course in the state. Little over an hour drive from downtown but well worth the trip. Great accomodations down there if you are looking for somewhere to stay as well.

In B'ham, Ross Bridge is a good track and worth the price in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the Oxmoor Valley courses. Those are skippable. Timberline and Bent Brook are pretty good value options a little outside of the city as well.

I'll also add that the poster above me is correct, Streamsong is in a different tier than anything B'ham has to offer. It is in the middle of nowhere though and will likely be a good bit more expensive (especially in the fall). The golf there is about as good as it gets though.

Call Pine Tree in Leeds and see if they will let you play.

The are owned by Troon so if any of your group belong to a Troon club maybe they can hook you up.

RTJ has two complexes in Birmingham, they are first class.

Played it twice a few months back, great course. I love playing holes with alot of elevation change, since we basically get none in BR. This course has 3 pretty cool downhill par 3s, #5 is an absolute beast.

Plus the resort, Pursell Farms, is a pretty cool place to stay at the night before or after your round.

The routing there is one of the best in the Southeast I think. Only one or two weak holes.

I've been going there since my college days back before many people knew about it. It's been interesting to see it develop over the years. They've nailed the whole asthetic of being a top quality Southern resort. I think it will continue to become a more popular destination over time, especially if they add another course like they plan to.

Streamsong is the destination, there isn't much else out there and you aren't even close to Tampa. BUT...it's nice...SUPER NICE. I'm going play there on the 23rd.

If you are looking for volume of golf, definitely Tampa, you can't go 5 miles without some really nice course staring you in the face.

Waterlefe in Bradenton
Copperhead course (PGA course)
TPC Tampa Bay is nice
The Eagles GC (Forest or Lakes Course) - Both are nice
Lake Jovita - South course is preferred
Saddlebrook Resort - Saddlebrook course or Palmer Course (Palmer is resort style course)
Or Top Golf if it's raining...Plus many others that I did not mention.

I mean, I would think Tampa has more to do than Birmingham. Not sure why this is a question unless all you want to do is golf.

Really not a lot of good options for public golf in Birmingham compared to Tampa. Unless you want fall weather or have enough pull to get into shoal creek id choose Tampa.

I'm not sure what all is in the Streamsong resort but it is an hour or so from Tampa. Also need to check the cart rules for the time unless you are walking it. They have carts during parts of the year and no carts in the rest.

Birmingham, the guy above hit it. I'm not impressed with Oxmoor but Ross Bridge is nice. Pursell Farms is the catch around here but it is an hour drive also.

Fall in Birmingham is tough to beat. Our public courses are better than almost everything private in La.

Stay/play at Ross Bridge.
Stay/play at Pursell Farms/Farmlinks.
Play Limestone Springs
Play Ballantrae.

All first class courses, scenic and public.

I made the mistake of playing Limestone Springs after going to Pursell one year. Limestone is a phenomenal course but it sadly got overshadowed.
