A buddy and I were laughing about this last night.

About 20 something years ago, I thought my game was pretty solid, I played to a 4 hcp and hardly ever had a really bad round back then.

One day I go to Memorial Park GC in Houston as a single and they put with 3 gentlemen in their late sixties or early seventies. They told me that they play a game with birdies, sandies, etc... I played the Blues and they played the Whites. What the heck, I was 20+ something years younger and strong.

I said sure I will play. These guys proceeded to hit their drivers about 180 yards, 3 wood to the fringe of the green, and either chip to gimme range or chip in on every damn hole.

I know that they all birdied most par 5's. One guy hit driver, 3 wood and 7 wood to a foot....

Needless to say, I shot a 76 with a couple of birdies and still lost 25.00 bucks....

They were great sports and we all had beers afterwards, with me buying of course. I learned that day to not judge a book by its cover in golf.

Because if you ever play early with those guys they try and finish in two hours! It’s easier To do when you chip it close

Playing at a US Open course on vacation, I apparently played with one of the guys from your group. I outdrove him by at least 30 yards on most every hole. He did not miss anything from 60 yards in. And it was not his home course. Had it happen with guys at their home course before, just never by a guy that walked on the course for the first time.

Never wager with old men on the golf course. Those suckers are snipers with those runners up to the green.

Yep.

There is a well known Astro that thought that he had game a few years ago.

He was known as always trying to bump up the stakes at the club. That day he raised the wrong group.

This group had a guy with some old worn out Hogan irons and old TM Bubble shaft woods.

The former Astro had to write a check for almost 10 grand to the guy after he ran out of cash paying the birdie pool. He later quit the club.

There are plenty of guys here in Houston area that can throw some low numbers at you.

Albert Crews who was on the Big Break schooled me in flip flops and a rental set of top flights. He swings cross handed.

When I would get off on night shift, I use to head to City park and play 9 holes. I ended up playing with a bunch of seniors that just hit the ball so straight for 200 yards. I would hit it pass them and they would just laugh and put their 2nd shot pin high. Didn't care if it was another 200 or 50 yards, all 4 of them would be on the green why I was chipping to save bogey. Thought I would get them on a longer course like Dumas and they would still beat the brakes off me. They thought me a lesson that I still use today. If you are 1st or last on the tee box, you better be standing up there with a tee and ball in your hand and glove on. No 20 practice swings either. They hated slow play. Miss those guys.

New pro at the country club would never play in our weekly money game. We played 5 bet 5 birdie, two down automatic. After weeks of nagging him to play, he said he would play nine with us. None of us could break 80 but as best ball could throw a slew of birdies out there every now and then. Well the pro, who had polio as a kid and has a limp proceeds to birdie 3 out of the first 4 holes to our none. Somebody from the pro shop rides out to us and the pro has to go. Thank god. Never asked him again.

I've never met the fabled ole baws that chip it close and just par you to death like people talk about on here.

I've been "schooled" by plenty of former college golfers and guys 60+, but they're all excellent ball strikers. I never really see the guy going driver and chasing a 5 wood into par 4s going too low

Played with my grandfather and he always schooled me. Shot his age every year for the last decade of his life. He was the epitome of that style golfer. Down the middle, one the green or close, chip and a putt or 2 putt every time.

Yup.

We got paired up with two old baws at Indian Bayou a couple years ago and we made a friendly wager on the first tee.

We were easily 50 yards passed these dudes and all they hit was a 7 wood off the tee. They constantly hit 7 woods and when around the green the ball was immediately chipped next to the hole.

They beat the frick out of us.

They 7 wooded us to death .

Played with a group of old men on the old LSU course 20+ years ago.

Same thing: 180 yard drives, 7 woods and chip & putt all day long.
