Golf Ball Rule?

As I understand it, the ball you tee off with, for each individual hole, is the ball you must finish the hole with, unless lost under penalty - OB, Water
But you can change to another ball at the next tee box if you choose too, is this all correct?
Also you may clean you ball once it is on the green but you may not lift and clean prior to that.

No, you play 1 ball the whole round. Meaning, if you start with a ProV with 2 dots. You play that the entire round. If you lose all of your #1s, you can use your #2s. However, they need to be the same markings, and you must tell your partners about the number switch.
It’s a shame we need such a rule, but people cheat.

I think you may be misunderstanding his question. You are right, but you can change from a ProV to another ProV between hole 5 and 6 (or between any holes)

That’s the one ball rule. And it’s a local rule that has to be put in effect. Otherwise, you can change balls after each hole is completed.
You can also mark the golf ball differently under the one ball rule, it’s just the ball must be the same, I.e., 2019 ProV1x. Guys will sometimes mark a provisional differently.
Also, under 2019 rules, you can put a new ball in play if you’re taking relief, whether from a penalty area or a cart path, etc.

On top of what others have said if the ball is cracked or cut during the hole, you are able to replace the ball at its resting spot except on the green.
Whatever ball you tee off with, you finish with. If one ball rule is not enforced, you can play with any ball for the duration of a hole.

Yes, almost all events including USGA you can switch brands and types every hole or when you drop a new ball into play via penalty. The one ball rule is usually only put into place in professional tour events but requires you to use the same brand/type for the entire round.

This thread needs to be deleted and restarted. So much misinformation and confusion.

If you’re playing in the presidents cup this year, better not switch to a rock ball on the par 5’s.

if youre on the PGA tour, they have people to tell you these kind of rules
if youre not on the PGA tour, then it doesnt matter. Switch your ball in the middle of a hole if you really want to, just dont switch to distance balls for drives and spinny or feel balls around the green and putting. But if its damaged and you notice it when youre in the fairway, then who gives a shite? if its muddy, clean it. Youre probably just gonna shank it anyway, but whatever makes you feel better

This is a bad interpretation of the one ball rule.

If you are playing with your buddies on a Saturday morning, hit whatever, whenever you want if they are good with it.
If you are playing in a local tournament, local rules apply. Normally, it isn't as strict as the PGA tour rules. The bigger the tournament, more rules about the golf ball come into play. Normally, the one ball rule meaning you have to play the make and model of your ball the whole round.
Cleaning your golf ball is permitted once it lands on the green and marked appropriately. If it is a wet course, then lift, clean and place may be in effect. Ball lands in the fairway, gets all dirty from mud, you lift, clean and place the ball back in the fairway, one club length from the spot and no closer to the hole. In other words, you can't place the ball closer to the hole to get shorter yardage. If it is really wet conditions, then it may be lift clean and place through to the green. Means if even hit in the rough or fringe, you can lift, clean and place.
I think that covers it to my understanding and to the question.

These are all acceptable tournament rules. If it’s you and your buddies and no ones an a-hole, pick up and clean your ball whenever. I clean mine off when it’s in the middle of the fairway and has a chunk of mud. Golf is evolving to b more friendly to players, no need to follow every single USGA rule when playing a friendly round.
