For the PGA Championship Tournament to have an identity, the should play at muni’s.

DJ Pie of No Laying Up brought this up last night to close out the podcast...they need to play the PGA Championship on municipal golf courses. Harding Park, Bethpage, Torrey are true muni’s that have access to the public (lower rates for residents-access at higher rates for non residents).

PGA would show they want the game to be accessible for everyone and be cool to play championship courses like the professionals at reasonable green fee rates.

I agree with the take, it would help the PGA Championship to be identified as the people’s tournament.

How many muni's could accommodate a tournament like this?

I'm all for it if it can logistically be done.

Good question,

Lexington, Kentucky has Kearney Hills which has hosted a handful USGA tournaments...it is owned by the city of Lexington and is a Pete Dye course. I know Cleveland, OH has a couple of Donald Ross muni’s (if PGA gave them money to set up (get the greens and bunkers back to original design).

It would require the PGA membership and the city government to work together to make it work to get courses in tournament championship set up.

Chambers Bay

All you need is a good rotation of 8-9 or so kind of like the US Open has.

It’s been 25 years but Papago Park in Phoenix I think could do it. Not sure how a May tournament would be there. It doesn’t get stupid hot until mid June from what I remember.

I like it, and personally, I do not like when ANY major is played on an existing Tour course. IMO, it's dumb to play the AT&T and in February and then as US Open event later in the year. Pebble is awesome, but I don't need to see it twice. I think it takes some of the luster away. PGA and US Open should be played on non-"regular" tour sites. Municipal course would be a huge bonus. Just not sure how many Tour-quality muni's are out there.

WTF? What more does the PGA or any other organization need to do to project "accessibility"? The game is available to any person, from blue blood aristocrat on the NE coast to jorts wearing rednecks in Kansas.

What does playing it on exclusive and/or private courses- which i assume are more difficult- have to do with accessibility?

Sounds like you are asking for greater accessibility to the host courses of PGA majors. Bring your kwan, wish granted.

I’m going to head over to Wing Foot after the US Open and see I can get in a round of golf.

Let’s be honest, the few Championship courses that are accessible to the majority of golfers is Bethpage, Torrey, and now Harding Park. (And be reasonable, $300/750 to play Pebble, Whistling, Erin, Pinehurst is not really accessible).

Did you watch any of the commercials the PGA had during the tournament? I’m not the demographic being targeted for access. That is where they are trying to grow the game.

Good. Maybe they will keep prices down then. If I’m ever in the area and have a chance to play it I’ll go check out. Harding Park.

Pebble Beach
The Ocean Course at Kiawah
Pinehurst No. 2
Harding Park
Torrey Pines
Erin Hills
Harbour Town
Kapalua Plantation Course
Chambers Bay
Fallen Oak
Old Waverly
Whistling Straits
Cog Hill
Bethpage
Greenbrier
Spyglass

Those are just the public ones I saw skimming the Top 100 that have hosted or host PGA tournaments of some form or fashion. These aren't really "munis" in the sense of being ownes by the municipalaity.

I'd much rather the PGA be the architecture snob tournament. Send them to places with small crowds and small infrastructure, but great architecture. Pine Valley, Seminole, Bandon, Streamsong, etc.

so you want the championship courses to be accessible? Again, wouldn't that be the responsibility of the individual course, not the PGA?

and the rate to play these championship courses is apparently feasible, cause people are playing them or have memberships.

Your issue is with the courses not the PGA. Its not a matter of accessibility. Its a matter of you not being able to afford it to play a specific course that was host to the pros. Thats not on the PGA (IMO).

I wish they'd go to a couple of these while fans still can't go. I know the main knock on some is distance from major city or space for PGA infrastructure
