I don't play many tournaments, so none of this was on my mind until after it was over and heard a bunch of complaints.

Two man scramble with no mulligans. The flights were determined after both rounds were completed. I think the pro tried to find a combination of natural breaks and equallish groups. Obviously, this doesn't affect the top flight.

So, where it gets interesting is in ties for the lower flights. This was announced on the first tee both round. Ties for fist were handled by score card playoff with the winner of that dropping down to first in the lower flight, and the loser(s) of it bump up to last in the flight above. This plus the flighting potentially, and has in the past, led to some questionable results.

Apparently, in last year's tournament, two teams get to 18 tied. One team bogeys and wins their flight while the other pars and gets nothing.

Is betterment a better rule? Betterment plus how many strokes you're behind in your flight?

If you shoot -25 over two days you don’t have to worry about that kind of stuff

WTF

Maybe it's just me but I'm not entering a flighted tournament if I don't know what flight I'm in.

That sentiment is growing.

If it’s a two day tournament, why not flight it after day one? And for day 2, the most you can improve your score is 7 or maybe 8 strokes. You could also ask for handicaps and any team that scores “badly” can only drop a single flight below where they would be if the tournament was flighted via handicaps only.

Well this is just stupid. Scrambles are so fun but also just end up being the absolute worst half the time.

If you flight it beforehand you have to trust that people are being honest about their handicaps. Most people don’t keep a GHIN let alone an accurate one.

When our group goes to Tahoe, we don't know who our partner is until we've finished. The pro over at Edgewood draws names (32 of us next month) and takes our individual scores w/handicaps & figures it all out...each day is a new day/partner. The first day we pay 1st, 6th, and 10th. Second day is 1st, 4th, 8th.

Third day is 2 man scramble with teams set up by how we scored the first two & then drawing. The top half & a bottom half player. Payout is 1st, 5th, 9th. I have 15 handicap and got 6th on day 1 and 5th on day 3.

It takes a lot of the pressure off of us and let's us relax and enjoy playing & drinking.

A friend of mine has an idea of betterment+. So your betterment restriction is determined by your score. Team that shoots, say 68, in round one has a number of 6, while the team that shot 66 has 4.

Should it not be slanted the other way? There’s always a horror story of a group shooting 75 to get in a higher flight then 66 to win it the next day

I’d be less worried about a group shooting 66 day one. They aren’t angling for a higher flight ! At least not correctly …

I don't think so, but I have to admit it was a confusing conversation. The plus part is to punish those clearly shooting higher than they should.

Wait, shite. Probably

I just played in a tournament that was flighted after day 1. It’s a stupid way to do it.

That's what I was expecting in this one.

This is a fascinating subject, really.

Every way, I can think of the flight a tournament has a fairly obvious way that people looking to abuse the system can do so.

I’d hate to be the one deciding how to do it. Whenever someone came to bitch about it I’d have to agree w them!

It's got to be policed by the members. I havent been at my club 6 months but I'm definitely calling people out for not posting scores.

I love this. This is very similar to how we used to do it for our yearly South Carolina tournament. I like yours better because of the payout structure. What absolutely sucks is shooting the tournament low of 67 then blind bogey format knocks you back to 4th, just out of the money...
