Currently about a 10 but hoping to get down into the low handicaps with lessons in time. What is the boards favorite irons at the moment? Playing zx5-zx7 combo set but just curious if there is anything new out there? Prefer to stay away from crazy strong lofts.

No issue with the Srixons but technology changes so fast these days.

I'm playing Titleist T300s. I like the forgiveness and I don't like trying to turn the ball one way or the other. I'm currently around a 10 handicap.

That's a hard question to answer because the look and feel of different clubs is different for everyone. You are at the skill level currently where a fitting would benefit you if you are going to get new clubs. Find a good fitter and go into the fitting without any preconceived notions and let the fitter tell you what you want.

I was fitted into the Srixons. Like I said I don't have an issue with them just know technology upgrades can make even the best clubs obsolete pretty quick these days. Seems like just a few years ago my Callaway Mavericks were all the rage now everything is carbon fiber this or that.

Truly, go to a golf shop that has a simulator. Find one that fits your eye and feels good when you hit it.

The brand is less important IMO in the mid handicap. When you look down at setup and are more confident, you’ll be more relaxed in your swing and score better.

This is not as big a deal as you might think. Club makers have been claiming yardage gains every year since at least the early 1990s. Even if they added 1 yard per year, that means everything in the bag has gained 30 yards.

I have been playing regularly for at least 25 of those 30 years and have not seen drastic jumps in technology that would make something less than 10 years old "obsolete."

Hell, for myself the biggest difference in distance I ever got from equipment was more from getting fitted shafts and finding a club head that help bring my ball flight down than any drastic technology change. Even that was about 5yards per club. Maybe 7-9yards for a club or two.

I agree with all of this. I don't think there are really any year over year leaps in performance through improvements in golf technology.

But does it? Golfwrx released a study of driver distances over the past 6 years, and we’ve lost a yard of distance. Tells me tech isn’t improving that significantly after all.

Ride with the Srixon combo

Any of the hollow body, players distance irons shoukd fit your bill…

Taylor Made, Ping, Titleist, Mizuno, PXG all have versions of this and they’re all fine.

I have Gen 1 PXG 0311s and I don’t see myself dumping them till I wear the grooves out. They’re great

Damn fine clubs and no real reason to change..

Same.. That's why I went with the ping i230's.. pretty traditional lofts, feel great even though they're not forged and after 12+ rounds with them I haven't gotten any crazy flyer like I did with my PXGs.... Just got hit a bunch.. I tried the P790, JPX's , Gen 5 PXGs and the T200s .. Ping's won out..

I’ve been floating between 11-12hc for a bit and I still play my Mavrik Max irons just fine even though they’re supposed to be for high handicaps.

I saw a YouTube video where the guy had a robot hit 30 years worth of drivers. It was essentially 1 yard per year in distance.

I play the PXG 0311P Gen 3 irons. First set that I have owned that was not a GI set. Got them late last year and it has taken me a little while to get use to them. Still struggling to hit the 4 and 5 iron consistent but overall I like the feel of them.

I eventually want to get a second set. Really interested in trying Sub 70. Heard good things about them.

Ping I230 and PXG P series would be more forgiving and still fit into a low handicapper’s bag.
