How much trouble would it be to add a couple bucks to every green fee and stop the madness of paying for shitty balls to hit…most likely off mats.

It can’t cost that much to keep up a driving range, and avoid the old man lurking around trying to scrounge up balls people left behind. Had to bust a guys chops the other day who had the nerve to ask me if I was “going to hit all those” as I was casually warming up and chit chatting with my partner.

Old f’er walked over to the chipping area and stole a small buckets worth from there.

Are there any public courses that don’t charge for range balls? I don’t recall ever seeing any.
If it bothers you that much you could join a private club that doesn’t. Problem solved.

Its their way to try to ensure people don't just walk to the range and hit balls without paying for them or being a member.

There's so many better and easier ways to do it but it's the easiest thing to do for some people.

I saw a guy do that at Santa Maria a while back. He picked all the balls up and then just started hitting them on the range. He would also look at me and another guy to see if we were still hitting balls.
But I also had the guy at Clark tell me to go hit the left over balls on the range instead of buying a bucket. I brought the bucket anyway and the guys that were going tee off would hit a couple of them, maybe he told them the same thing he told me.

I mean not really. I can see hanging around and just hitting a few left over but actually asking someone while they are warming up is kind of a douche move. Just go buy some dang balls. Made me laugh because I'm trying to think of what I'd say in that situation. Would want to call them a cheap bastard but I'd probably just end up rolling my eyes and swatting over a few balls to him.

I've resorted to doing this on my lunch break. Blackhorse is now charging $20 for a bucket. It's insane. So, when I get a chance, I go to chip and putt. At this time a year, nobody finishes their bucket before playing a round. So, there are usually 2-3 half buckets waiting when I finish chipping.

I know some will look down on this, I'm not proud of it, but $20 seems crazy to me.

Also, I never ask if someone is done with their bucket. That is an absurd move.

Bryan Park here in Greensboro is a fantastic municipal golf facility. Actually 36 holes on Lake Townsend. Players and Champions courses. They have free range balls with the greens fee.

Why not just join and get on the range plan. Stealing golf balls is tacky.

That’s what caught me off guard. I always see a poor or two scrounging around for balls left behind. Whatever. I guess this old timer saw me talking more than I was hitting and figured what the hell? Dude, it’s $100/round. Go pay $10 for some balls.

Good god. Hell no.

I mean if the person is done, who cares. No way I'd pay $20 for range balls. My course has a pretty great practice area. Two smaller ranges with pro v's, two putting greens, and a chipping green with three manicured bunkers and the range plan is I think only $250 a year.

Because I am lucky to get out there once a week. I'd be better off paying for range balls each time than paying for the range plan.

It costs them money to pick up those golf balls. If they rely on public play to stay open why shouldn’t they charge for them?

I can't fault a course too much for wanting to have people pay for range balls. Kind of a hastle yes, but I can understand if its a public course and people walk up wanting to hit 500 range balls and turn a range spot into topo map of the surface of the moon. What does irritate me is when there is a separate charge for range balls but the range is in absolute dog shite shape and the range balls are 20 years old. What are we really paying for if you arent maintaining the range?

RTJ charges, I’m a member so I can use my shag bag in the short iron/chipping area if I want. There’s pretty much always unused balls on the range itself if you just want to hit a few to get loose.

Our private club doesn’t. We have several putting greens, driving range with grass, and some practice holes. All included.

It’s so choice. If you have the means I highly recommend it.
