Chipping: shaft lean; how much?

I see several different approaches to chipping.

Some people lean the club well toward the target; some don’t.

Is it just whatever you can replicate successfully? I sort of like a more neutral hand position with less shaft lean, but I see some very good players really pinch the ball on chips with a good bit of forward lean.

I tend to flick my wrists (I know... terrible) but it's repeatable and extremely consistent for me.

No shaft lean for me.

It depends on what you're trying to do. Using the bounce should have somewhere around vertical shaft at impact.

I forward press on all my irons shots. It's the only way I set my wrists properly with any consistency.

Helps me generate some backspin too... not alot. Just enough to check and roll out about a foot.

Weight 60-40 on front foot, ball back of center 1-2 inches, slight forward shaft lean (5-10 degrees). With a little shaft lean, you can still use the bounce of the club. I use mainly front(left) hand to avoid getting flippy with right hand. I just rock shoulders to achieve the backswing and downswing. Because of set-up, descending blow will occur naturally.

Depends on the shot I am playing, but chipping, I.E. chip and run, ball off my right foot slight forward press with hands. Try to put weight on left foot and grip slightly firmer with last three fingers of my left hand. Basically make a stroke similar to putting using big muscles and my shoulder turn. Feel like I am pulling the handle through with my left side with my hands a few inches in front of the ball at impact.

If you like the more neutral approach, I thought this Adam Scott Golf Digest piece was really good:

If you prefer more shaft lean/leading edge, look for Phil Mickelson videos.

If you want a dead bounce landing, shaft almost vertical, if you want 1 or 2 hop & stop/check/bump and run, lean it towards the flag.

Or just hit flop shots from everywhere around the green.

Shaft pointed at left pocket ball just inside right foot.

Flop shot for me is either amazing or agonizing.

The course is so thin right now that I have been putting from well of the green, but I know that is not going to work soon.

The wrist flick requires some high end hand eye and I guess I’m trying to find a technique that allows me to miss the ball a little which means I should work on engaging the bounce more on these shots.

Thanks for the variety of opinions.

I definitely have a forward hand press.

A random drill I did for a while that really helped my just general chipping around the green was putting a ball bucket in front of my shot. This wasn't a long chip, so not a big follow through, but had the bucket far enough away that I could swing through and not hit it, but close enough that I had to make sure I got the ball up.

It really helped me focus on staying down and through the ball. Chips were landing softer and even had some spin to stop them. Just get a consistent and repeatable motion and drill it home. For me, that was a forward hand press and keeping everything pretty still.

I have no idea if that is a "good" drill or anything, but it really helped me out.

This.

If you want more loft, use little shaft lean.

More of a skip and run, more shaft lean.

I learned old school Ray Floyd technique: get the ball on the green and let it roll to the hole, when possible. Also, use various clubs depending on distance from fringe to hole.

Anyone "chip" (really use a putting stroke) with their hybrid or 3 wood?

If it is a tight, hard lie, and the line is not interfered with, or if I cannot get the ball up because I am stuck under a tree, I will do this from time to time.

Santa Maria #11 comes to mind. If you miss right and get stuck under that tree, a 3W can be run up onto the green from underneath it.
