Kids shoots 62 to take a commanding lead on the qualifier but realizes after finishing he wasn't allowed to fix aeration marks on the green. Calls himself out, respect, and gets DQ'd.

I wonder if golf rules aficionados bottle their own farts

Mike Small runs a good program up there.

What a joke, at most should have been a two stroke penalty. I really enjoy watching / playing golf but shite like this is very off-putting.

What a dumb fricking rule.. But good on that kid for knowing he made a mistake and was willing to admit it.. That is lost on a lot of people in society these days..

Didn’t know about the rule, but how does one go about fixing aeration marks anyway?

Why on earth are they playing a US Open qualifier on punched greens?

He thought they were spike marks which you are allowed to fix. He only realized that they were aeration marks after his round when hearing someone mention how hard it was to putt on the aerated greens.
My guess is they were aerated 3-4 weeks ago and mostly healed.. enough so for him to mistake the aeration for spike marks.

Damn, he thought they were spike marks. Who's to say they weren't? Doesn't seem so clear cut really. I mean what if his ball Mark was in an airification hole?

This is the real story here. Who the hell made that call? I get that the golf course superintendent is a difficult and often thankless job but a lot of these guys are such miserable assholes. Maybe just wait a week or two to punch? "This is my course and I'll punch when I say it's time dammit"

That’s what I’m wondering. If he honestly didn’t know and assumed them to be spike marks, is he really in violation of a rule? Total crap situation here.

This !
Proud of the kid, that's a statement of strong character.
With that said, there are so many ridiculous and antiquated rules in golf that need to be changed.

A local rule was the play here. They should have addressed this on the first tee.

What a complete USGA cluster

Agree with that too.
I still believe that the rules of golf need some serious revamping.
The OB rule is one of them.

Absolutely...a player should not be punished for repairing what he thought was a ball mark.

100% it’s crap like this that gives golf a bad rep.

And make a very difficult game even harder and make it really hard to grow the game.

It's like hitting out of sand while grounding your club and find out later it's a fricking sand trap. One that has trash and debris in it. Sorry DJ.

The OB rule is one of them.
Duck hook a shite into water 50 yards left of anything, 1 stroke penalty and you drop a ball where it went in
Push a shot a little right of the fairway where you still have a clear shot but it’s marked out of bounds due to houses or something else, you are re hitting from your original shot with a penalty . Makes a ton of sense
