So, I booked a trip to Bandon back in February of 2023. Over 600 days later, we finally got to go to golf heaven. Here's a recap for anyone interested in going. Overall spoiler...it was as epic of a trip as I had hoped for.

We left on Friday the 11th and flew into Portland. There are closer airports but the flight schedules worked out best since we had a few La guys and Memphis guys going. Also, we went early because we hit up the Oregon/Ohio St football game since Eugene was on the way to Bandon. Overall, the trip couldn't have started much better.

Drive into Bandon on Sunday morning. The drive was really gorgeous. Check in was as easy as possible. Shoe (the longtime greeter) welcomed us and showed us where all of the ShipSticks shipments were. They were all lined up ready for us to grab. We hung out at the Main Lodge (where some rooms, The Gallery, McKee's Pub, OG Bandon Dunes course, etc was). Walked around and just soaked it all in.

We grabbed our clubs and drove over to our rooms at Lily Pond. The shuttle service was incredible. Just call and 3-5 mins later, your shuttle pulls up to wherever you are. The staff everywhere was just as friendly and nice as you could be.

Went over to the main practice area before heading to Shorty's - the newest 19 hole short course. It was a really cool stroll through some nice property. Wild greens that were still so very young - firm, bumpy, patchy. If I came back to Bandon and had some time to kill, I might consider playing this again but I think I'd just hang out at The Punchbowl. We went over to The Punchbowl before dinner. What a cool arse putting course. 36 holes. Think wild putt putt golf with no guard rails. Holes placed on top of volcano-like mounds, quadruple breakers, 3" putts that roll 30'. Just a really fun thing to do to kill some time and have a few drinks. Lots of shouting and laughing from other groups. A must do.

Dinner that night was at Ghost Tree Grill. It's the newest steakhouse at the 18th hole of Old Macdonald. Absolutely delicious food. Really nice vibe and atmosphere inside.

Monday a.m - played The Preserve, the 13 hole par 3 course. Mature, gorgeous, unreal views of the property. Would absolutely play here again. Loved it. We played at 8am so there was a slight fog that broke when the sun came out and unveiled the amazing property. You could certainly understand why Bandon was built here at this point. Highly recommend playing. Yardages ranged from 75-175 so there were some nice challenges.

Monday p.m. - Bandon Dunes. We played the main 5 courses with caddies. Certainly your call whether or not to hire caddies but since it was our first trip there, they were invaluable. Temps for the whole trip ranged from about 45 in the early mornings to high 50s/low 60s. So the afternoon loop at BD was perfect weather wise. I picked the afternoon to play this one so we could see the sunset was we hit the coastline for the few holes in the middle of the back 9. It was everything I had read about...tough sand dunes to navigate, properly placed bunkers, and some tough greens. Hit the ball well and there are ample opportunities to score well. Not overly long but there are some monster par 3s from the tips. I think I had 3 of the 4 over 215. We finished up that round and walked over to McKee's Pub and had dinner. Really vibrant scene. Sports on everywhere. Lots of golf stories being told be the crowd in there. Food was good.

Tuesday morning - early morning tee time at Sheep Ranch. It's at the northernmost end of the property. This is the one course that has it's own driving range so we were able to hit some balls prior to heading out. The fog was the story on the day. 10 mins before our 8:30/8:40 tee times, it rolled in and was unrelenting all day. Winds were calm, skies were overcast. Nothing could break it. I would love to tell you how much I enjoyed the sights of Sheep Ranch. I think the course was pretty cool...what I could see of it. There were times where you couldn't see more than 10-15 yards in front of you. Again, having never played there, the caddies were a massive help. Only real complaint about SR was the condition of the greens. They lost them a couple of yeas ago and it's just hit or miss on them. Bumpy, patchy, really firm and because of the marine layer, they were full of top-level moisture so approach shots were skipping. Being that we were guessing on distances on almost every hole, it was a challenge. But there was something really cool about having that fog just lay over the course. Overall, I'll give it an incomplete rating because I really don't know how much I enjoyed it besides the uniqueness of playing a links course with no sand bunkers, loud roaring waves crashing against the coast, and a heavy fog. As we strolled up 18 fairway, the fog finally broke. So it was cool to be able to look around and see what we had just played. Pro tip...get the pastrami sandwich at the SR clubhouse. It was awesome.

We hauled tail to get to our next tee time at Old Macdonald. Old Mac was the course that routinely sits at 4 or 5 in everyone's rankings. Not mine. I thought it was incredible. Old Mac was designed by Tom Doak and he paid homage to CB Macdonald with the course design as every hole was a hat tip to features of holes all over the world. The course starts inland and heads out over the dunes on number 3. The tee shot at 3 has to carry a massive dune - it's completely blind save for this giant Ghost Tree which is the logo for Old Mac. Once over that dune, you stay out for about 12-13 more holes. The course runs next to Pacific Dunes and makes its way to the coast. There are some absolutely special holes and I thought the level of shotmaking required here was much different. Again, having caddies was imperative because lines taken would've been much different had we not had them guiding us. The greens were enormous which presented a challenge as well. There were blind shots, shots up massive dunes, shots from the tops of the dunes to greens perched below, elevated tee shots, giant par 4s...I think we ended up with about 5-6 tournament tees so it was well over 7,000 yards from the back. Fog was a problem for about half the round but still, what we got to experience and see - I thought it was incredible.

Tuesday morning - Bandon Trails. This was the day I was most looking forward to as I had heard so much good stuff about Trails and Pac Dunes. Trails was absolutely stunning. Coore and Crenshaw did Trails (and Sheep Ranch). This course has it all. Starting in the dunes and then weaving into the forest, it was perfectly manicured and as challenging as you could ask for. Some blind shots, short and very long par 3s, a couple of drivable par 4s from the tips (with lots of risk if you missed), elevation changes. Just an awesome, awesome golf course. The only downside...they punched the greens the day before we played. Had no idea. They did give us a 25% discount on the round so that was helpful. Another course over 7,000 yards from the tips so it was a brute. But it was right there at the top for me in terms of courses we played.

Tuesday afternoon - We grabbed lunch (breakfast and lunch at Trails was really good). Headed to Pacific Dunes - hit up the punchbowl prior to teeing off. Pac Dunes gets an unreal reputation and I can't say that I had anything negative to say. Stunning. Spectacular. Challenging. As visually stimulating as I had hoped. I just walked around soaking it all in the entire round. My only negative...the damn fog rolled in again. Soo, the 4th, a 450+ yard par 4 along the coastline was once again mired in marine layer and not visible. Luckily it didn't last too long and we were able to catch the sights on the back 9 as they ran somewhat parallel. The last wow view was on the tee at 14 when you could see every course at Bandon from that tee box. Almost all of Old Mac was visible. Parts of Sheep Ranch, Trails and Bandon Dunes were all visible. The Gallery for dinner (Italian). Food was very good there too. The next morning, we all brought our clubs over to the main lodge and shipped them out. The guys at the guest services office took them and boxed them up for us. Was as seamless as you could imagine. We all closed our folios and headed back to Portland. Forgot to mention it, but everyone had their own charging privileges and it was as easy as it could be.

Side note on the rooms...Lily Pond was awesome. The rooms were big...600 sq ft-ish. Toilet was in a sep space than the shower - both in lockable rooms. They had shoe dryers in each room in case you needed them. Fireplace. Nice TV. Very comfortable pillows and beds. Nice little back patio that opened to the pond behind it. They put all 4 of our rooms right next to each other so we hung out at night and had some drinks on the back patios.

The trip was one for the books. Absolutely incredible and highly recommended. The resort was everything I had been told and envisioned. I'm certainly looking forward to a return trip one day - maybe staying a week and playing a few of the courses at different times of the day so that I can see what the different conditions do to the overall experience. The caddies said theres a trade off - October is typically less windy but that invites the fog to hover over the property. Temperature was amazing and no rain, so that was a bonus. The walking was a lot so keep that in mind. We played 122 holes of golf in 72+ hours. It was hard on the feet. I'd like to spread it out a little next time. I think you can count on about 14-15 miles a day. We hit 60+ miles on the trip between the football game and Bandon. It was a great deal of walking but totally worth it.

I’ve been there twice and I can’t wait to go back. Trails is probably my favorite. It is golf at its finest and will go again. Best resort in the world for golf; better than Scotland IMO.

Thanks for sharing. I made my reservation last December for June 2025 and I’ve spread it out over six days. My game better come around before then.

I’ll definitely be back at some point. It’s absolutely worth the hassle of getting out there. They are finishing up the 6th championship course - not sure when it will open for play. I was told it’s several miles south of the resort but it’s supposed to be a great new course. The caddies also told us that they are trying to buy Bandon Crossings to make it 7 championship courses. My caddie said Bandon Crossings is an awesome course that would fit right in. He was a college golfer at the Univ of Arizona and said he plays Crossings all the time and loves it. Bandon truly is golf utopia. I wish you wouldn’t have to book things so damn far in advance but it’s definitely a trip I’ll never forget. They need more rooms for resort guests - apparently they are about to take the space near the first tee at Old Mac and build more accommodations. They haven’t broken ground but several people told us that is the plan.

Good tip on the hot pastrami at SR. Probably the best thing I ate on property. Agree on Old Mac. Not everybody gets it, but it’s incredible.

Was fortunate to play Bandon twice. My favorite golf experience ever. Almost as good as my round at the Old Course. The family has been instructed to spread my ashes on that place whenever I am gone. Extra money for bail has been accounted for.
Our group played the green tees, not the tips. We had fore-caddy and pulled or carried clubs.
Trails was my favorite. Pac is tremendous. I guess I'm one of those guys who just doesn't get Old Mac. I even had my best round there shooting a 79.
The Preserve is incredible. Better than some 18 hole courses that I've played. Just the fun-factor alone is amazing. Putt the 13th. Best I could do was about 3 feet. One of our guys holed-it!!!
So happy for you. It is a MUST for anyone's bucket-list.

Great write up. Glad to hear the weather was pretty good other than the fog. Our group will be there this time next year.

The Lilly Pad is my favorite place to stay at Bandon. BTW, did you get the meat loaf at McKeys?

Not a bad place to have as a final resting place. It's golf heaven.

Agreed on The Preserve. After playing Shorty's, I wasn't sure if we should even play it but since we were there we went ahead and played. It was awesome. The views alone made it worth it.

I've never been to Europe (and obviously never played golf in the UK), but this is what I had in mind. It's like being on a totally different world out there - except Trails. I actually prefer the look of Pacific Dunes but Trails was so awesome that it was right there at the top for me. I honestly thought Trails, Pac Dunes and Old Mac were all 1A, 1B, and 1C. That's not to take away from Bandon Dunes or Sheep Ranch. They are all worth playing. I've got several other bucket list type of trips that I need to check off the box but I will absolutely be back to Bandon. Its worth every penny.

I didn't but 3 of the guys with us did. I tried it...better than the burger I had for sure. I wanted to try Pacific Grill but it was really busy on the two nights where we tried and we didn't feel like waiting until 9pm to eat. We were already two time zones off so eating at 11pm was a tad late.

They said they had recently renovated Lily Pond rooms (in 2020 I think). Super convenient. Close walk to the main lodge area but that shuttle was so simple to use that you didn't have to walk anywhere unless you just felt like it. We were so busy playing golf that I didn't really get to walk around and see the other parts of the resort. My next trip there will be a tad more relaxed or during the summer when you can play golf until 10pm and you aren't rushed trying to squeeze 36 in. It was dark at 7:15 so playing 36 was a challenge, even teeing off right at 8am.

They do. Ghost Tree Grill, The Gallery and Pacific Grill. You can walk into any of those as well but obviously not guaranteed to get a table.

We had reservations at GTG and The Gallery and walked in a second time to GTG. Pacific was too busy both times we tried so we went to McKee's Pub. There is also The Tufted Puffin which is a walk in version of The Gallery. I called 2 weeks ahead so I'm not sure how long in advance they take reservations. I would probably call much earlier because there wasn't much in terms of reservations left at that point.

On our trip, we gathered to discuss Bandon and the courses for our Website. The most divisive discussion came from Old Mac vs Trails. One of guys LOVED Old Mac and did not understand the love for Trails at all. I LOVED Trails and Old Mac was my second least favorite. Opinions vary as much as the course styles! You cannot go wrong with ANY of the courses.
Here are the Plugged in Golf (PIG) reviews (shameless plug):

I grew up playing high school golf in Oregon and never got to play Bandon. Played basically every other even decent course in the state.

Just got an invite for a trip in September. Only have times for Bandon Dunes, Trails, and Pacific, but couldn’t be more excited for it.
