Atlanta Course Recommendations

Meeting up in August with a friend in Atlanta and we were planning to play a round. Was wondering if anyone has good recommendations

Atlanta is big with almost no public golf courses in the downtown area. Do you have a particular area you're looking at or a certain distance from Atlanta?

If you can: Druid Hills, Peachtree, East Lake.
Otherwise head to Alpharetta and play Echelon.
Search those and find alternatives if you'd like.

This sounds interesting. I am a member of a club. Is it any club that they’ll do it?
Also we have a new head pro I haven’t even met yet. What would I even ask him to do or would he already know?

He would know. Just say “Hey me and a buddy are planning a trip to Atlanta and would like to play Druid Hills. Would you mind reaching out and seeing if they would have some availability for a reciprocal?”

It matters what part of town. I can give you recommendations all over the metro area, but where you will be based/spending most of your time will be the determining factor.

Not to hijack, but what about when staying downtown? I go to market with my wife sometimes. Wouldn’t mind squeezing a round in after we’ve been fighting over how much money she’s spending on fine china and bath bombs and shite for a couple days. Bonus points for courses that are alright during the winter.

He’s staying in Phipps Plaza/Buckhead.

There are two decent options within a reasonable drive from Truist Park. Dogwood in Austell and City Club Marietta. I prefer City Club myself.
It he wants a really top end course Echelon in Alpharetta would be it. I also recommend the Frog in Villa Rica but those are both hefty drives.

Anywhere is going to be a drive from downtown. Echelon in Alpharetta and the Frog in Villa Rica are good. I also like Woodmont in Canton.

I called my pro gave him date & time range. He call DH pro shop & set it up.
I’m sure tour pro will know what to do, unless he is a new pro & this is his 1st job. You may need to introduce yourself, let him know you’re not a nutjob (assuming you’re not one), so that he can vouch for you and your buddy.

I played Bear's Best out there last year and enjoyed it (18 Jack Nicklaus holes from around the world)

Well I got a tee time for East Lake so not sure what's so funny
My club pro mentioned Cherokee was great too and trying to get us on there as well. Anyone have thoughts on thar club? Specifically north course

If you got on East Lake, you don’t want to play Cherokee. I’m laughing because this person recommended EL in August which is around the tour championship. They typically close down several weeks ahead of the event, so I’m surprised you got a tee time.
Laughing at Peachtree because your local club pro can’t just make a call to get you on there.
Cherokee has two courses, both TOm Fazio. North is their championship, South is fun but gimmicky (short par 5’s, hard dog legs etc). Excellent amenities out there.
You might have luck getting on Capital City’s Crabapple course but not their in town one (which is forgettable), or Ansley’s Settindown course in Roswell but not their midtown course (only 9 holes anyway). Settindown was just renovated by the same architect who did Detroit GC where the Tour is this week. It’s the toughest rated course in the state of GA now.
Cherokee probably your best bet unless EL is an option. You’ll pay $600 person at EL. I think they still do a flat rate that covers F&B.

Ya, even I know you can't call up Peachtree and I don't know ATL golf. I have a loose connection there but wasn't in a place to call on them quite yet

Like I mentioned, hope to be able to do both. The North was what my pro was going to try to do.
