As I read this forum, I see a ton of speculation on what Golf Courses Superintendents (greens keepers) know or don't know, do or don't do. So I decided to come on here and offer to answer questions you may have about Turf Maintenance and Management.
Just a quick note about me. I have been doing this 22 years, and started at the Bridges at Casino Magic Bay St. Louis back in the good times. got my first Superintendnet job at the President Broadwater Resort in Biloxi. then went to be an Assistant during construction / grow in at TPC Louisiana. Left there and was assistant at Koasati Pines at Coushatta for 2 years before getting handed the reigns. spend 8 years there and went into chemical fertilizer sales. when the sales company sold I ended up back as an assistant at the Golden Nugget doing construction and grow in. was later asked to help the National in Westlake, but that was a disaster and Koasati came calling for me to fix that course again in 2016. spent 4 more years there before being asked to fix the Golden Nugget after 2 hurricanes. so I took the job closer to my kids and home.
I might not have all the answers, but I may be able to cut down of the false informationa and change the perception you may have about what we do.
So fire away!!

What do you mean fix? You were fixing as an assistant or a head super?
Posted on 4/22/22 at 9:53 am to leblanc272
I was an assistant pro at a country club for a decade. The supers I worked with were great and knowledgeable. A really thankless job, especially if dealing with a "Greens Committee" full of morons who haven't figured out their job is to let the super do his thing and leave him the hell alone.
I did get to mow fairways at one club I worked and had a blast doing it.

This is a continuation from another thread, I’m curious which herbicides are labeled for golf greens?
Also, is MSMA still the basic standard herbicide for Bermuda? Is there something better/different that’s being used?
Have you or any other sups in the area reached out the the universities working on the herbicide resistant poa problem?

What is your preferred weed eater string brand? Thanks

Great topic.
Question, it seems that there is a higher invasion of Poa into greens this year than I remember in the past, any thoughts on that and is it just lazy maintenance by the courses themselves.
Another question, I have heard that certain grasses like Mini Verde prevents invasive grasses on greens because it's thatch is to close and thick. Is that correct ?

why do bunkers suck on 80% of golf courses in the South?
i know drainage is an issue but you would think that would be addressed at some point

How bad would it be if we just got rid of sand altogether?

Not bad at all. #1 at the wetlands has a "grass bunker" in front of the green. I've seen it be just as punitive as a sand bunker. I think that due to maintenance cost, this will be a solution for a lot of courses.

You and your boys need to quit punching the greens right when they get prime. Never fails

grass bunkers
Grass bunkers are more penal for good players than sand and bad players aren't going to leave it in a grass bunker 3 times.
Why any public course in the wet southeast has sand bunkers is beyond me. Country clubs are going to keep them because they can afford them and the average person doesn't understand that they won't miss bunkers.

Why are there so many different variations of ‘sand’? Seems every course has a different texture, color, thickness.

fixing as a Superintendent. I was fixing turf conditions and overall plant health and lack of doing it correctly by previous management.
