They would be called good golfers, and, generally speaking in my experience, good golfers are slower than average golfers.

my dad didn't teach me to play golf
he taught me to play fast golf because members don't invite slow players

I play very fast according to different groups I’ve played with. I rarely take practice swings, get my yardage and club while others are hitting(knowing your yardages is key), watch everyone’s shot so you can locate them faster, start reading putt while approaching the green (slope of green, grain, etc.), and when it’s my turn GO! It’s not hard at all. Also walk like you have a pulse; irritating watching already slow players walk slower than a turtle.

IMO, this is the biggest one. When the first guy is reading his putt, I’m doing the same thing as long as I’m not interfering with the process. If someone is chipping from around the green, I’m reading my putt during that time.
I feel like that’s one of the things slow golfers struggle with mightily.

but my guess would be it’s in part due to sounding arrogant about golfers who shoot in the high 70s-low 80s, and then being a little over the top in terms of time.
Got some real Mile High Draw vibes in here.

The thing about really slow players is that they are generally slow at most things in life. They are habitually late for appointments and they are puzzled when called out. They are unteachable. They should be chess players, work with old people, or become farmers at the edge of Siberia.

They probably drive the speed limit in the left lane too.

You don't have to be a good golfer to play fast. Just be ready to hit when it's your turn. Save the joke or story for after the shot or when walking up to the next tee box. OP is a bit over the top, and sounds like a real fun uptight guy to play with.
I was once a Head Pro at a club. We had a Marshall on each nine, and after about six months of them reminding people to pick up the pace, most of our members got the hang of it. Four hours was about the longest round. It takes a good Marshall though, that's not afraid of pissing a few people off every now and then.
I recently played two high caliber courses out in Scottsdale. $300 to play each one. Greyhawk was absolutely the slowest round I've ever played. 5 1/2 hours with 90 degree rule. The Marshall would drive by and just say, well boys, we are just really busy. It was absolutely insane how slow it was.

It's not enjoyable when people are breathing down your back when you are keeping pace with the group in front of you, and the group in front of them, and so on, and there really is nowhere to go.
Then move over and let me play through. Pretty simple.

Walked off the course this afternoon after taking over two hours to play 9 holes. Two twosomes in front of us and a fivesome in front of them. The next group was at least two holes in front of the fivesome. Nobody letting anyone play through. The marshall just driving around waving at everyone.
One of the guys in the group in front of us was topping every tee shot, playing multiple balls, waiting for the green to clear on short par 4’s, and walking complete circles around 50 foot putts, squatting down from every angle on every green.
It may have been the most aggravated I’ve ever been on a golf course.

Negative.. my daughter and I play a lot of golf together and at our home course at Pelican if no one is in front of us we'll be done in 3-3 1/2 hours..

No matter how much people complain about actions by golfers slowing down a round, this is the biggest culprit. I know I am being a hypocrite here because I'd rather play in a twosome with a a friend than a foursome with two random people, but it definitely impacts pace of play. If courses were serious about pace of play, they would have a good marshall that makes sure people tee off on their tee time and try to get as many foursomes as possible. It might not speed up play all that much, but the rounds will flow better and be much more enjoyable.

People who try and race around the course to finish in 2hrs, constantly trying to play through back to back to back foursomes and glaring at you when you take 10 seconds to line up your putt are worse than people who play slow.
See, this is what gets me. I’m admittedly a fast player. It suits my natural pace. My regular groups, on an empty course, average 3.5 or less for a leisurely round. There is NO racing around, no ‘just pick it up’, we line up putts, tell stories, laugh, have a great time. Likely even go in at the turn for a beverage. Still, over 4 hrs would take willfully trying to kill extra time.
Several things I see in front of me a lot :
- cart/ club management. Park or drop bag in such a way as to exit green away from oncoming play. That way they can hit approaches sooner.
- what bopper said earlier. If cart occupants are far apart, drop one off and go to other ball.
-When a player hits a ball in the gunch, hit your shot first THEN help look. That way when ball is found or new ball is dropped only one guy has to prepare and hit. Not 4
- true ready golf. Not just on tee. If cart park area is a walk from where one guy has to go hit a pitch from, everyone else can putt while he goes. If player A is debating club choice in fairway and B is 10
Yds ahead and ready : “hey man I’ll just hit so you can take your time”.
- if you are shooting 90s you don’t have the club face control to go through a long pre shot routine or especially pre- putt. Get lined up and play. As you improve you can refine this routine, but by then you aren’t spending all day looking for balls etc. You can be ‘ lost ball guy’ or ‘ every millimeter matters’ guy, but it makes no sense to be both.
I played with guys I’ve never played with before last week. One in particular lined up all putts meticulously with a line on the ball, plumb bob, adjust, then pick up mark and putt. It took a bit of time on the greens but we still played in less than 4 hrs on a busy course because no none was looking for lost balls. Even with a ‘slow’ putting routine we didn’t play slow.
I hate slow play, but even more I hate the characterization that playing under 4 hrs requires any sort of rushing at all. It doesn’t.
And 5+ hrs??
I don’t even understand what people can do to eat that much time.

That's the thing. Most groups are not going to take 5 hours to play a round if nobody else is on the course. It's not taking 5 hours at Carter Plantation because one groups is slowing doing everyone. If you have 8 minute tee time gaps, mismatched group numbers, marshalls doing the bare minimum, and groups teeing off as soon as the fairway is open on the first tee, you're going to get traffic jams. It's just like road traffic jams.

quote:Nothing would be worse than a 5 hour a round golfer, I personally have never played a round with one as I would walk to the truck at the turn. I will say that my teen golfer and his buddies can clog a course, they will all look at each others putts, video each other and stupid shite like that. He and I have had a long, long talk. Took him with me a couple times and showed him strategies for parking cart, dropping off a person and going to hit your ball, lining up putts ahead of time...etc. They dont take long over the ball, just the admin shite got them bogged down.
People who play speed golf and push, push, push groups that are keeping a standard pace of play of 2 hours/9 holes or 4 hours/18 holes are just as big of scourge on the course as slow players that take 5-hour rounds.

I’m a DOG at a high end club in AZ. I played pro and was a D1 player… I am the fastest player I know outside of a couple of my boys I gamble with who are 12’s and play in 3 hours.
I would imagine that's why. If you start off the post bragging and refer to yourself as a DOG, you're probably a douche and deservedly get the downvotes.
