re: Anyone hearing big LIV rumors?

The PE group that funded the PGA is not going to get back anywhere near what they put into it. The PGA had money problems and needed money to pay players to stop LIV defections. There hasn't been any added value to the PGA tour to make up for the original financial issues, they just got cash to make up the budget shortages. The modern PGA tour model is still an issue.
You think a private equity firm just gave them donations without projecting an ROI? Don’t even know how those firms exist and operate? They’re not in the business of charity

I imagine a lot of golf agents are having the worst days. Can’t imagine they ever sign to many more players. Talk about steering your players in the wrong direction
It's one thing for the guys who signed up at the beginning. No one knew how things would shake out. But it didn't take all that long to figure out that LIV was never going to be able to compete long term with the PGA Tour. The trouble in getting a TV deal should have been the first sign of major problems. The guys who came to LIV later after the issues were pretty obvious, that's on them and their agents.

Trey Wingo just did a deep-dive in sports viewership in the US. #1 was the NFL. #2 was College Football. #3 was the PGA Tour. They are in excellent shape.

That’s actually insane lmao. Shrink the game.

Who knew COVID would be the best thing to ever happen for the growth of golf

Considering their biggest event just peaked at 14 million viewers I’m going to need to see some shite to support that pga tour is #3

I’m assuming it’s average viewers per event/game or something like that. I can prob buy that if that’s the case

Golf: 2.7 Million average, 13 Million peak (Masters)
MLB: 2 Million average, 16.1 Million peak (World Series)

This whole thing is spectacular.
I can’t imagine it going any worse for the LIVbots or any better for the PGAT stalwarts.

Pride is about to go on a victory lap that this site has yet to see

Also legitimately what an addition to Rory’s legacy. Being the rock upon which the PGA was saved. Sticking his neck out, getting lambasted by folks.
Especially for the Europeans, hard to imagine the tour holding on to Fleetwood/Lowry/Fitz/Rose/Hovland if Rory doesn’t do what he does.
Also Scottie to a lesser extent by just becoming the clear best player in golf right as this all happened and never being linked with LIV in the slightest. No tour without him was going to have an argument for being an elite tour.

Can we now say that Phil made another bad bet by betting on LIV?

Maybe Phil and Norman can pony up to keep this great golf tour alive.
This 1,000x.

How exactly is walking away with 9 figures from LIV at 50+ years old a "bad bet"?

Such a thing called legacy and being in good standing with the PGA Tour. He will probably never be invited to anything PGA related ever again, his legacy is tarnished and he will be remembered for failing to kill the PGA.

He made a shite ton of money for himself and for a lot of guys on the PGA Tour too, so not the worst thing in the world for all parties.

I did not realize how bad off the NBA is right now. I can't imagine they were getting beat by the MLB and golf even just 5 years ago, but I could be wrong.

this is complete nonsense. His playing legacy is the same it's always been. He gets to go to the Masters every year he wants to, he can still hang out with the same people...what else is there?
Well, for starters one day Tiger and Phil were gojng to most likely be honorary starters at Augusta. I doubt that happens in either case now.
But at least people like Tiger. Phil is going to succeed Greg Norman in the "nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I'm going to eat some worms" club of older golfers.
Let me put it another way. Bob Costas says he once told Howard Cosell, "Every member of this industry (broadcast media) should look up to you as a role model, but no one does and it's your fault." People should look up to Phil (and Tiger too) as they did Arnold and Jack, but they won't, and it's all self-caused. Tiger did it to himself because he has a problem with substance abuse. Phil did it to himself because he's Phil and cannot get out of his own way.
At least guys like Rory and Scottie are seeing this first-hand and hopefully will not make the same mistakes.
