Why did the FPS take over as the preferred genre of modern video games?

Out of all the genres available, why does the first person shooter stand as the most popular genre.

Is it the explosion of multiplayer?

There are literally tons of FPS series that are major franchises. Why the lack of creativity?

Not counting GTA, this genre is far and away the most popular with gamers and studios.

What gives?

I think this is the reason. It created the best word of mouth advertising you could get and a perfect storm of a few hits and booming online services on PSN and XBL.

Easy investment. Pop in the game, kill for an hour or so, and you're done. Plus with e-gaming taking off, it's what the young kids want to do.

Competition. It is what fuels me. I always want to be better than whoever.

FPS works extremely well because of online play. It is popular with playing with friends and is a great way to burn time. I'm much more of an rpg person but its rare for other games to give you over 50 hours of usage.

The multiplayer aspect of FPS games give them longevity/bang for buck. Games like COD are easily "Accessible" to a wide variety of gamers--meaning, they have a relatively low learning curve to actually get in there and play, and socialize at the same time.

Multiplayer and competition is the correct answer. Add to it our facisnation with firearms and you have a winner.

Its like being able to play a "guns" "cops and robbers" "cowboys and indians" with your friends without leaving your house and never dying.

Solid thread topic BTW

whomever

Sorry, I had to

But seriously I think it's vastly popular because of several factors:

- Learning curve isn't too steep
- Multi-player
- Plays to the desire to be competitive
- You can game for hours at a time or get a quick session fix. It caters to both casual and hardcore gamers
- With things like BF, COD, etc... You can put yourself in a simulated "real life" intense situation without actually putting yourself at risk of being shot or blown up

This goes back to the days of Doom, Duke Nukem, goldeneye, Perfect Dark... It becomes more "personal" as if you are holding the gun, running around, completing objectives.

1. Competition
2. Accessible to the masses
3. Easy to make

Because stuff like Final Fantasy sounds lame.

Shooting people is cool. (in games)

Seriously, I overheard a couple of 'bros' talking at Best Buy the other day. One said "yeah man I play call of duty and madden but that's it. I don't mess with that gay shite".

I feel like the market flooded with FPS is not a good thing.

It halts creativity from otherwise talented studios.

honestly if it wasn't fps it would probably be something else. Also think about how many gamers fps have brought in and how much money it has brought in. Like most things it has good and bad

I was never a FPS kind of person, so I've never gotten into the newer generations of games...I've played none of them.

I don't think it halts the studio's creativity, but considering how successful the FPS genre has become, branching out in a different direction is a little harder to sell to the big wigs.

GTA5 was strong, but it does help to have that established name.

Honestly, FPS games will always have it's market, but it's saturation will turn a lot of gamer's tastes to other areas. Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, Mass Effect..........these will always do well. And if Sony is true to their word about helping out the indie game market, those "other" games will get out there as well.

I may be wrong but didn't fps come out of a market full of platformers?

It's popular amongst gamers because 1PS is very intuitive. Pre-schoolers and inebriated adults can figure out how to play these games. (That's the "accessibility" buzzword). It's naturally the safest genre for investors to fund because they want proven formulae for success.

I think the multiplayer-gaming explosion also plays a big part. AI development can be labor intensive. Online multi-player 1PS games (especially those without campaigns) shed the need for AI development. One less corner to cut.

I think that it's mainly because the FPS genre, at least on consoles, is one of the easiest, if not the easiest, game to pick up and be good at right away, and that seems like it'd be pretty important for a fairly large chunk of the FPS genre's audience.
