What would I be looking at if I were to buy Witcher 1 and 2 from Steam?

$1.99 and $2.49 for both. Watching the Netflix series and it’s pretty interesting. Is this like an Elder Scrolls game?

1 is meh. 2 is where the series really starts taking off. I wouldn't compare it to Elder Scrolls. It's more like a better version of BioWare's RPGs. Easily worth the snack money.

Never played any of the BioWare stuff. The closest game I could think of that comes close to what I’ve seen is Assassins Creed.
Would I need to play 1 to understand 2?

Nah you could jump straight into 2 and not miss much, if anything. The main character literally loses his memory and you (the player) basically find everything out as he regains it. 2 is an absolute must before playing 3, though. It's one of those where choices from the prior game have actual consequences in the next release.
It's less linear than games like AC, but it's not quite as sandboxy as Elder Scrolls (3 is closer in that regard, though).
My experience with the series was that it was a much more grounded take on the fantasy genre executed extremely well. If you do decide to start with the first one, don't judge it too harshly based on that experience. It gets exponentially better with each game; 3 obviously being the pinnacle. Highly recommend if you're even remotely interested in RPGs or the fantasy genre.

If you really want to play 1, I recommend mods to improve the combat and UI for the game.

Absolutely. While it was a great game, the play hasn't really held up at all.
2 is good. 3 is amazing.

My only memory of my brief time with 1 is how bad the shadows were.

Make sure to play out the tutorial in Witcher 2, and let us know how it goes.

I might suggest Witcher 1 over 2. 2 is extremely janky

Wouldnt bother with 1.
I really liked 2 but some people couldn't get past the tutorial.

Skip 1. If you're really interested in the world, just watch a youtube vid.
I tried 2 but ran into some bugs. Never tried playing again. The intro sequence is amazing.
Honestly, I would just play 3.

I also ran into bugs on 2 and never finished.
I still consider the Witcher 3 to be the best game I’ve ever played and you absolutely do not need to play 1 or 2 to get into the world. There is a catch up in 3 where you can pick the choices from 2 as well.

I must be the only one that prefers 2 over 3. I get too distracted by side quests in huge open-world games and Witcher 3 is massive.
Witcher 2 was a little more focused and was an incredible game.

Skip one, it doesn't hold up.
Play two, don't let the tutorial scare you power through and then enjoy an awesome game, I loved it so much I immediately played it again when I finished it. After that prepare for the epicness of 3.

Some of y’all are making me want to try 2 again.

I played it after I finished Skyrim, and I wasn't sure which I liked better.

I've been going back and forth on whether to start with 1 for years. I own all of them, but just haven't had the time yet. Is 1 really that bad and gives so little jumping straight to 2 is the best path?
Keep in mind that I'm not someone who minds games that "haven't aged well". For example, I had zero issue playing Mass Effect 1 for the first time just a year or two ago. Hell, I recently went back and replayed Lords of the Realm II

1 and 2 are incredible. Much more unique and intelligent stories, and they benefit from the much greater focus. No question marks and shite to visit, so things are paced very well. 1’s combat is a bit janky, but you get used to it

1 is a great game, it actually has a very good storyline. It is just a bit dated in terms of playstyle.

I played Morrowind for the first time about five years ago. How bad can it be?
