UPDATED W SPECS Google's gaming reveal: Stadia cloud steaming service at GDC

According to Google, each Stadia server will contain a custom x86 AMD processor running at 2.7GHz, 16GB of RAM, and most importantly a GPU capable of 10.7 teraflops of performance. (They’re running Linux, not Windows, which may matter when Google tries to attract game developers.)

Google wasted no time in comparing that teraflop number against the Xbox and PlayStation competition — where the Xbox One X manages a mere 6.0 teraflops, and the PS4 Pro around 4.2 teraflops.

Google is launching its Stadia cloud gaming service at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who says he plays FIFA 19 “quite a bit,” introduced the Stadia service during a special keynote at GDC this morning. Describing it as a platform for everyone, Pichai talked up Google’s ambitions to stream games to all types of devices. Phil Harrison, a former Sony and Microsoft executive, joined Pichai on stage to fully unveil Stadia in his role at Google. Harrison says Google will amplify this game streaming service by using YouTube and the many creators that already create game clips on the service. Google previously tested this service as Project Stream in recent months, allowing Chrome users to stream games in their browser. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was the first and only game to be tested publicly using Google’s service, and the public tests finished in January. Of course, Google won’t be limited Stadia to just one game. Google demonstrated a new feature in YouTube that lets you view a game clip from a creator and then hit “play now” to instantly stream the title. “Stadia offers instant access to play,” says Harrison, without the need to download or install any games. At launch, games will be streamable across laptops, desktops, TVs, tablets, and phones.
quote:
Google demonstrated moving game play seamlessly from a phone, to a tablet, and then to a TV all using Google-powered devices. While existing USB controllers will work on a laptop or PC, Google’s video teaser also revealed a new Stadia Controller that will power the game streaming service. It looks like a cross between an Xbox and PS4 controller, and will work with the Stadia service by connecting directly through Wi-Fi to link it to a game session in the cloud. This will presumably help with latency and moving a game from one device to another. You can also use a button to capture and share clips with straight to YouTube, or use another button to access the Google Assistant.

Is the presentation complete? Did they say when it is going live?

Consoles are just slowly evolving into desktop PCs, except with no keyboard

This is terrible for the gaming industry

Great, now we can have exclusives on 5 different platforms
Google is the last company I would trust with my gaming data. Not that the others are better with it, but Google just flaunts using your data for other means.

I'm actually a pretty big Google user. I have Google Fi, I use a Pixel device and have used Nexus devices as well... I pay for google drive, gmail is my biggest personal email account:
That being said, this scares me, and I don't like it. Take it for whatever that means: but THIS is where I draw the line on my usage of Google, and I will not support it monetarily in any way.

No date yet, but I have a feeling it will go the way of the (many) failed Google products e.g. Google glass, Google+, Picasa, Hangouts, Allo, etc

Yup. I have a droid phone, use Youtube and use Google for some searches if DDG is not enough. They link all that behind the scenes to make a bio about you. The last thing I want them doing is linking in my gaming activity.

Seems like a new version of the 1984 video game crash waiting to happen. Too many platforms with no real differentiation between them.
The fallout basically killed console gaming for several years and set PC gaming back significantly in the US.
I would like someone to sell me on why this is a good thing considering the oddities of various platforms already make cross-platform porting a major issue. (Hardware orthodoxy on iOS vs loose standards on Android, differing PC configurations making quality unreliable, differences in PS and XBox processing making some titles dogs on one console or the other, etc)

Yall can bitch all y'all want, but if it works as well as the beta did, then sign me up. AC Odyssey worked flawlessly for me. I'd love to not have to worry about hardware and I don't really care about not "owning" the game.

Same here. I have a good computer, but it ran crazy well. There was some input lag, but I barely noticed it.
The problem is that it can't work with certain genres like fighting games, competitive FPS, and games like Rocket League.

I'm prob old school but I prefer a closed console, tv, and couch for gaming.
I did my share of PC gaming in the golden age (sierra, lucasarts. doom,quake1-3, half-life, tribes, etc) but I just prefer the console experience.
It will be interesting to see if this takes off. I just don't think cloud streaming gaming ala netflix works for gamers.
Time will tell.

Nah, what originally killed the video games industry was a lack of quality control. Way too many barely functioning games shoved out the door without any sort of gaming press digital or otherwise to warn the public.
This though will fundamentally change how we see gaming in what I feel is a negative way. Accessing your games from anywhere and not needing powerful hardware is all window dressing to avoid the realization that cloud gaming is being pushed because it provides a means for the publisher/developer to restrict access to your games.
If the cloud service is experiencing technical issues, you can't play your games. If your internet is down/unstable, you can't play your games. If the service provider shuts down, you can't play your games.
Not to mention games will never look as clean nor control as responsively over the internet.

This will fail hard. The input delay is awful

Quality control did suck but you had the additional problem of an utter glut of consoles and computers out there, with a lot of the same titles ported to all of them.
To sum it up in a single picture-
And that isn’t even all the platforms QBert alone was ported to, as it is missing the Apple II and a few other systems from that timeframe.

I'm wondering where the ads are going to go during high fantasy games.

I'll probably try it.
Nvidia Shield got me playing my PC games again. This may make it easier for me to get quick fixes of games I don't want to lay out $60 for, like sports games.
I don't have time to fight people online for hours any more, so very slight lag isn't an issue for me.
