The side quests are just as good as the main quest. That’s really hard to answer. You can really do this game however you want.

First few missions to get the point and some people to work the stations in your ship..

the rest really is up to you, but I'm no where near along in the actual story as I should be, and I've essentially just built a ridiculous hab on an island to watch the suns rise

I’ve yet to build any outposts. It just seems like more work than it’s worth.

The general consensus I've seen online is that it's a good idea to complete "Into the Unknown" before totally cutting loose exploring the Universe. I'll keep it spoiler free, but there's a little sumptin' sumptin' you might want to learn through that mission that'll be helpful during your travels.

I started by building a house, high on the hills, overlooking the ocean and forests of a planet..The walls are glass and the habs are round..I set up mannequins and am putting all the armor I've collected onto them, guns in a room, helmets, etc..

I've only just started to mine since most of the stuff I'm building with can easily be mined

I wouldn't exactly call it an exploit as it's all part of how the game works, but building an outpost in the right spot can allow you to fly through levels.

i posted this in the spoiler thread but meant it for here...doh.
as i stated before ive been digging just playing around with the ship design feature. i really wish space combat and exploration was bigger and even more ship options. oh god....maybe i should play eve online?

anyway, one thing i learned is that the enemy ships target your "center mass" in combat. so people have been exploiting that by making mass center empty ships. lol. pretty funny. see link below for short clip.
the cube

bonus video, just cuz i got a kick out of it.

gotta be kidding me

I so badly want to build ships but my dad gaming time is so sparse I just do a shite ton of quests. I'm in the middle of the ryujii quest line right now and just got done sneaking through *the* building and holy shite it was awesome.

ryujii quest line right now

I've seen multiple posts here about this quest line? Is it good/worth it? I paused the main line and currently doing the freestar ranger quests.

It's fun if you like persuasion/stealth, haven't beaten it yet but when you have to infiltrate a certain building without being seen I had a lot of fun.

for any cowboy bebop fans, spike spiegels voice actor steve plum has a small role for a quest in neon. kinda fitting to have him in this game.

I've spent the last couple of days doing the outpost thing, I went from 20 to 61 last night. It would have been more but I didn't realize how much more time resting on Venus can take up (thus creating more resources). My initial goal is to get my Piloting up enough to pilot a Shieldbreaker so I can take out some space pirates (Failure to Communicate side quest). With current ships I can take out one, possibly two but I don't have the shields for the three waiting on me (until I upgrade).

Long-term goal:

yea, i did the starter base on Bassel iii-b and the time dilation is insane along with having four resources.

I'm having problems with crashing to desktop. Makes the game essentially unplayable. Sometimes I can play for an hour and sometimes not for 5 minutes.

Same as this reddit thread

fricking sucks. I built my PC with Starfield in mind and I can't really play it.

Funny what a difference in playthrough. I have one outpoust and all it has is two iron extractors and a landing pad. I haven't even begun to touch it, but my starship is an absolute beast and I'm untouchable in space. Currently trying to max out crew spots and I am slowly turning my attention toward research, upgrades, and outpost.

Level 41 and clearing sidequests before powering through the rest of the main story.

Where is a good outpost tutorial to maximize the investment. Want to do one, just not my main focus on first play though.

What planet/moon?
What material for most credits?

Can you make an outpost you can have all your ships physically at on landing pads?

no...Outposts were trial and error for me, and it's essentially a triangle of planets that send things to the "A" site...

Jemmison (sp?) is a pretty good planet to start with for trial and error

Level 69 ( ) last night. I'm still struggling to get through with the Failure to Communicate side quest due to not being able to take 3 enemy ships with my one ship (maxxed shields skill and 2nd level ship ballistics). I bought the Shieldbreaker but apparently I need to get my piloting up to 2 for B-class ships (which, if memory serves, requires me to defeat enemy ships while I have them target-locked, except it never tells me what key to use to target lock).

Nice. I went straight for starship design 4 and piloting 4 then bought an amazing ship solely for its reactor, ripped it up and rebuilt it with top of the line parts. I figured I'm going to go NG+ before I get my outpost skills up so no sense in trying to build out a network that's getting wiped.

Target lock requires at least one point in targeting control systems and then you'll lock on by pressing x after a short time in your reticle.
