Again, my edit, they could. But how do you justify it? If it was for a "technical" reason, maybe. But if your game works the same way on both consoles, why charge a fee on one and not the other.

That's first party. I am mainly referring to third party as we already know Sony is desperate to do anything to attract customers. They really need to win big with this console and get a good jump out of the gates.

No it isn't, it also mentions 3rd party. It's the same as the PS3, they're able to implement online passes still. They can't implement restrictions on selling, trading, etc.

Exactly. Sony is really just upholding the status quo (from this generation) in regards to DRM.

No disc based but they can still have access passes preventing the use of the features of that game. You are being breaking things down as far as they will go as an act of deflection. It's still a form of DRM to have access passes is it not?

Online Pass for EA has been discontinued. We know this but it probably needs to be re-posted.
LINK
Why did we decide to do this?
We listened to the feedback from players, and decided to do away with Online Pass. We hope that eliminating Online Pass will allow more people to play and enjoy EA games for a long time to come.
So the new Online Pass is the Xbox One used game strategy. What will they do for the PS4?

Kudos to them for doing something though. Sony saw the backlash Xbone got and this is their chance to differentiate themselves. I have no doubt they did not establish this DRM policy until after the Xbone fallout. If all they had was "BOOM $399!!!" last night then it would have been a terrible show.

Uh, yes. Sony said it's the same situation as PS3, which had some DRM, obviously.

Online passes are restrictions on selling, trading, etc. If someone knows they will have to also purchase a $15 pass doesn't that diminish the games value?
It's not on the level of control of Xbox obviously but acting like it's all of a sudden no big deal is very misleading by Sony and you.

Who is going to use it on the PS4? I think that is the biggest question. EA caved in this generation so why would they or any other publisher use it again on the PS4?
Posted on 6/11/13 at 4:20 pm to Bunta
DRM is interpreted so many different ways. I just know there's a difference between a console developer charging money to play a game on their system and a game publisher charging a fee to use their online services. Still hits us as a consumer, but if Sony doesn't get a cut from whatever a publisher wants to charge for an online pass, they still come off looking better than M$ on this issue.

Sure has because EA needs some good press right now.
Them doing away with it at this point means zilch about it never returning or even showing up for their bigger games like BF4 maybe.

EA caved in because they must of assumed Sony to follow suit. It's not too late to change their minds on the online pass thing.

It isn't. Same drill. EA decided to drop it, so that's one less publisher.
If you guys are arguing semantics, just stop.

Sony is like a credit card processing merchant when you use their online service to redeem codes. They get a % of every transaction as a gateway fee.
Xbox does too but Sony will get a kickback from access passes.

Are you referring to EA?
Because it is a bad business model for a publisher to use.

They obviously can change their mind. But if they do that on top of MS charging a fee of their own, that won't go over well.
