My wife got me a PS store gift card and these are the two games I've landed on.

I have 120 hours in Elden Ring, I beat it the first time and then dropped it for a long time, but recently started a NG+ and I found my groove again. I know Erdtree is really good, and I had always planned on getting it at some point.

Clair Obscur, turn based has never been my thing, I don't hate it but I never stick with it long. But I hear great things about the parry aspect of the combat, and I played the first part of the game when I had a gamepass trial and the story seems fascinating.

I know Obscur is the latest thing here, so hopefully I'll get some objective opinions

Im a massive fan of both genres, and FF is my favorite franchise of all time, but I also consider Sekiro specifically a top 10 game and bloodbourne a top 20 game.

So with that context take this advice as you will, Clair Obscur imo is one of the best games I have ever played in my life. It is the pinnacle of what video games can and should be.

With that said you cant really go wrong with either just depends what you want really. Shadow is really just more Elden Ring, not that is a bad thing, Clair Obscur is a MUCH more narrative focused tightly paced game with some of the best storytelling ever put to gaming

Not sure if you were aware, but there's a character limit to each post.

Coming from someone who never really played JRPGs like Final Fantasy growing up, I wouldn’t call myself a turn based kind of guy… the combat system with expedition 33 is unbelievably fun and gives you a lot to think about with strategy and stress with the parry system.

You’ve played and beat Elden Ring, so getting the expansion is obviously going to give you more of the same, whereas expedition 33 will be a wholly different experience. I personally would advocate giving something new a shot because I’m really glad I did. But you can’t go wrong with erdtree if you’re already big into Elden ring and souls like games.

To throw in a curve ball, part of me wants to see the reviews of the MGS3 remake. It's the one in the series I never finished, and the sniper fight with The End is one of my all time favorite gaming memories.

I should just buy everything.

The thing is, I'm not really. The only souls games that caught on with me are Elden Ring and Dark Souls 3. Every other attempt with the rest of the games hasn't resonated with me. I should really like Bloodborne but eventually grow weary of it. And I absolutely HAVE to be in that mood to play DS3 and ER. As much as I love them, they still piss me off a good bit and that's why maybe I'd lean away from Erdtree a bit.

I’d say get Clair obscur. Apparently that game is amazing. I love Elden ring and really like the DLC but it’s not as good as the original game

I don't like Souls games

Tried Elden Ring, didn't care for it.

Clair Obscur is one of the best games I have ever played, Top 25, easy.

I had never played a turn based game until a couple months ago when I started playing Clair Obscur.

I'm on my 3rd play through.

It's incredible.

I played Erdtree upon release and couldn't put it down. It was a great addition to Elden Ring.

Haven't pulled the trigger on Clair Obscur...so much other stuff going on and I'm knee deep in CFB, Hollow Knight, and Nightreign.

I don't have a ton of experience with turn-based combat. Is Clair Obscur more akin to Baldur's Gate's combat system or a Final Fantasy style of turn-based? I've intentionally avoided any youtube videos or discussion on the game in case I decide to finally pick it up. Want to go in knowing nothing.

Couldn't tell you.

It's literally the first turn-based game I've ever played and I'm 45 years old. My first console was the Intellivision.

That's what I did.

I missed so many subtle clues on my first play through that I'm noticing on the subsequent ones and it really might be my favorite game of all time. Just absolutely brilliant.

About a month before EX33 came out I finally beat Elden Ring. I told my wife that It was one of the best gaming experiences of my life and might be my favorite game of all time.

Then I bought EX33 shortly after and it dethroned Elden Ring. And it wasnt a “I really need to think about this one” decision. No, It was a “kthnxbye Elden Ring” type of decision.

I won’t go into much detail about why I feel the way I do but I lost my mother, step father, uncle, nephew, and the wife had a miscarriage all within the last two years.

I’m not going to say this game “saved” me, but the game did help me get through a lot of suppressed emotion.

I thought Elden ring was an unforgettable experience…now all I can think about is Clair Obscure.

Thank you brother. We are doing okay!

Hated to even put it out there but I felt I would be doing a great disservice to something that really helped me during a rough time.

Also, had none of those events happened in my life. I still would have it as my number 1.

Some things just stick with you for reasons you don't anticipate, or want.

I've mentioned this before, I love the Pixar movie Up, but I saw that in the theater with a bunch of family and friends the day of my mom's funeral. The plan was to go see a lighthearted Disney movie on a heavy day. The first 15 minutes or so

My friend (who I ended up eventually marrying) was sitting beside me and she gripped my arm really hard when the wife ended up in the hospital. I just shook my head and almost laughed at it.

So yeah, some things will just never leave you for a myriad of reasons.

Ooofff that’s there with one of the “better” movies experienced I have heard.

The other…when my sister was pregnant the BIL took her to go see the hills have eyes. The whole breast feeding scene. Yeah.

i cant comment on erdtree but i loved elden ring.

Clair Obscure, for me, is better than elden ring. It harkens back to an old school RPG with modern mechanics, great acting, great music, great art designs. its really a masterpiece. I cant sing its praises enough.

i dont think you can go wrong with either, but id vote for CO.

just avoid spoilers. the story unfolding is a really great part of it.

Similar deal with me for Witcher 3. I had gotten away from gaming for a few years and was partying really hard in my mid 20s to the point where it was obvious i had a problem. My dad had an intervention with me and it just happened to be around the time Witcher 3 came out. I decided to buy an Xbone and get back into gaming to keep from going out drinking. Landed on Witcher 3 to go along with it. That whole summer all i did was work, gym, and play witcher 3 and it kept me from drinking the whole summer of 16 and allowed me to get my head back on straight. The game itself was incredible and is my #1 game of all time but it also holds a special place in my heart because it came along at a time i needed to step back from the outside and work on myself

As good as Shadow of the Erdtree is, I don't think it's anywhere as good as the base game besides the boss fights. I think my overall enjoyment was slightly higher with Clair Obscur, so that's what I'd go with.
