Rumor: Nintendo working on 4K Switch, to release in 2019

Mid-gen console upgrades were popularized this generation with the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X, which both offer additional horsepower and improved visuals. Now a new rumor making the rounds on the Internet points to Nintendo creating a similar, upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch.
The rumor seems to stem from supposed “industry insider” Marcus Sellars, who is known for starting rumors and supposedly “leaking” information on Twitter. In since-deleted tweets, Sellars claims the upgraded Nintendo Switch will release in early 2019 with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and “dynamic scaling” that will let it output 4k resolution. Sellars also claims that this upgraded Switch will have some exclusive games that won’t be available on the standard version of the console, pointing to the Resident Evil 2 remake as an example, and that it will support streaming services like Twitch.
It should go without saying that this rumor should be taken with a massive grain of salt. Sellars may have been accurate about some leaks in the past, but he’s also been known to leak unverified information that has been fed to him by users trying to out him as a fraud. A lot of his “leaks” have also been proven false, like his claim that Black Ops 4 would be on the Switch, for example.
There are a couple of things that make this particular rumor hard to believe. First off, it seems highly unlikely that Nintendo will launch an upgraded version of the Switch in early 2019. It’s true that the original Switch released in March of 2017, but typically, Nintendo would want to schedule the release of a new console around the holiday season to maximize its sales potential. Furthermore, if an upgraded Switch capable of 4k visuals was set to launch in early 2019, it seems as though Nintendo would have announced it already, or at least hinted at its existence in an official capacity.
Another reason why this rumor is hard to believe is due to the claim that the upgraded Switch will support Twitch streaming. In the past, Nintendo has flat-out said that game streaming is “not fun,” and has never indicated that it plans on incorporating it in their consoles. Game streaming could have been a selling point for its paid online service that’s coming at the end of September, but since we haven’t heard any mention of it, it seems unlikely Nintendo is planning to jump on the bandwagon.
Is it possible Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded version of the Nintendo Switch for release in early 2019? It seems unlikely, but anything is possible. However, if Nintendo was planning to release an upgraded Switch, one would imagine it would release closer to the PS5 and Xbox Scarlet as a way of disrupting its competition.

I think that'd be a bad move this early in the cycle and I'd have questions. Would existing games work for that? Or would there now be "switch pro" versions you'd have to buy? With Mario Party/Super Smash coming out over the next 4 months, I don't see them wanting those to get segregated already.
Something I think that's more realistic and probably easier to implement, would be an upgraded version of the dock that has more horsepower. My only concern with that would be if you're playing and had to leave and picked it up to play in handheld, how would that conversion down play out? Or would some games just become unplayable at that point. I doubt that severe but interesting to think about.

They are trying to play catch up when they don't need to be.

If true, Nintendo is so dumb

No way this is real. 4K isn't on Nintendo's radar.
I bet we see VR before that since it was just found out there's a VR mode in the switch firmware already and was exposed the other day.

A 4K gaming tablet would cost a thousand damn dollars.

A 4k switch...looking at their current games, what's the point?

The systems reached its limits at launch.
It needs an upgrade. 3rd Party games can come quicker to the platform this way.

If anything it's going to be the long-theorized "upgraded dock." In that, you don't need a new console, but you go get a new dock that allows for significant upscaling at home and on a TV. Don't really need 4k on a handheld anyway, that alone makes it kind of a dumb rumor in full.

Yeah, I usually give most rumors at least a little thought... but this one goes into the pants on fire bracket. I give this rumor a .00000000000000000000001% change of being real. The scalable dock though: I could see a late '19 or early / mid '20 release

this would be a really dumb move. most people love the switch, faults and all as is.
with their current sales and projected gaming lineups anything that would divide the customer base this soon after the console launch wouldn't be in line with what is best for Nintendo.

This early in the cycle? Switch already has problems playing games from a few years ago and it's going to look even worse when the new consoles launch next year.
That said, no shot Nintendo does this. They're far more likely to make a dock-less Switch that has better battery life.

The thing that makes me balk at that idea is the dock does absolutely nothing right now. It provides power and video out. Adding computing power changes the entire way the Switch functions.
I could see them doing much like the DS and 3DS lines. Holiday of 2019 release a Switch XL. Same form factor, smaller bezels with a 1080p screen instead of 720p, and possibly a bump in specs that would allow for better performance in handheld mode. Two different SKUs, one where you just by the tablet to use with existing dock and Joycons, and one with everything.
