I was the opposite. I was an a-hole the entire game. The final 3-4 missions or so did enough to get my honor up enough to get the good ending.

I know this is a spoiler thread, but if you haven’t finished the epilogue, you might want to skip over this post
Why would John want to go after Dutch? Dutch is the one who killed Micah in the final standoff.... did I miss/forget something?

There was really just one mission in RDR1, get Dutch, so we really mainly just saw one aspect of John

John's family being kidnapped and held for ransom

Have you played RDR1?

Well yea, but like 5 years ago.. that’s why I asked if I missed/forgot something
I’ve had four concussions bro. Pretty sure I have CTE, lighten up a little bit, I can’t remember shite
I went and watched the opening scenes of RDR1, and John was looking for Bill.. that’s basically all I remember about RDR... oh, and the ending.. frick the army

It's all good, I just didn't want to dive into too much of the RDR1 story if you hadn't played it. As was said above, John's family was kidnapped and being held for ransom by the Pinkertons with the requirement being John find Dutch. Bill was his first lead.

It’s starting to come back to me now.. I sort of remember that
I have the same problem with movies for what it’s worth

Dutch didn’t finish off Micah, he only wounded him. John did the finishing move.

Pinkerton forced him to for his family's freedom. Though it was implied John wanted revenge himself for being left for dead.
I do think Dutch showing up at the end was corny tho

Arthur’s last ride is, hands down, the greatest moment in video game history.

So I have not played it. Does RDR1 take place AFTER RDR2??

So the whole time in RDR, he was referring to what went down in RDR2? I couldn’t remember specifically when he was left for dead

Yes. RDR2 is the precursor to RDR1
I think

Tread lightly ITT, if you haven’t played the epilogue yet

Yes it does. It takes place a I think like 20 years after RDR2.

Yes. Couple of different things, but the two main drivers are the basically two times Dutch left him for dead in the story. Once was basically when he was in jail and about to hang. Dutch had no plan to save him, he just said he did, like always. Second was when they are robbing the train and John falls off. Dutch says he was going to go back for him and basically watches John and then rides off and leaves him for dead.
Plus Arthur told John about a similar thing happening with him.

Roger that. Thanks for the reminder

also, im going to avoid this thread for now until i finish but i do want to get my thoughts on the game out
this is probably my favorite game of all time and the main reason why i think it succeeds more so than red dead, which was my favorite game of all time before this, has everything to do with arthur being a stronger character than john marston. thats no fault to john as im sure if he was given his own personal journey as extensive as this one through his own self improvement towards redemption i may feel differently. but its amazing what rockstar did with arthur. i remember reading about the 50 hour story before its release and worrying about it being too long and wasteful. that was not the case at all. the main reason being everything that arthur felt, you felt as well. you felt his pain when he did something wrong. you felt his agony in his voice when he realized how pointless his whole life has been in the gang. you felt his hopelessness those final few missions where he became so detached from dutch and the like.
and that in lies why i think arthur morgan should stand alone as a true GOAT character. you get a complete and total deconstruction and redemption of someone and hits you all in a very real way. where john marston was just a simple hero story, arthur was a honest to god redemption and the ending could not have tied it together in a more perfect way. i hope the epilogue highlights his sacrifices as im sure it will

I finally finished the entire thing. At first I found it shocking that less than 20% of people on PS4 have finished the whole thing, but then I realized that I'm part of the diehard core that played the shite out of this game and it still took me 6 weeks. I fear that few people are actually going to get to the parts of this story that make it great.
Holy shite. I don't think I've been punched in the gut by a game as hard as this one when Arthur fails to stop Dutch and Micah and dies staring at the sun. Yeah, I played high honor and chose to save John.
Also, that last trip up the mountain to confront Micah is just fricking awesome. The music and guys just coming out to the slaughter as you murder everything in your path to get to Micah was just fun. Of course, I waded through that snow holding two six-shooters. It just seemed proper. Then, I got the single greatest sense of satisfaction I've ever gotten from a game as I dropped into Deadeye and unloaded both revolvers into Micah's face. The bullet hole through his face as he turned and fell to the snow warmed my heart. frick Micah. I'm going back up there to put more bullets into his corpse.
This game, in my mind, is the greatest video game ever made by a large margin. There's just so much there and the story is almost poetic how Arthur (in my game) earned his redemption but his actions to save John and his family and John's actions to protect Jack from the things he did in the past are ultimately futile. The events of RDR2 echo throughout the events of RDR, the Pinkertons and the Army find and kill John, then Jack waits until his mother is dead and buried to track down and murder Ross. Everything Arthur and John sacrificed for Jack is undone. I fear it's going to be a very long time before I come across a game or a franchise that has the potential to match Red Dead.
Rockstar has created a masterpiece. However, it's not perfect. It could have been 10-12 hours shorter. It seems like they could have cut out everything that happened near Rhodes with the Hatfields and McCoys and the story wouldn't have suffered.
Finally, this is all I could think of when John got Abigail in the boat to propose. I can't be the only one.
ETA: I just went back and watched the end of RDR. I'm thinking it takes place almost immediately after the end of RDR2, maybe a year or two at the outside. It takes place in 1911, RDR2 starts in 1899, and Jack looks to be about 11 or 12 at the end of RDR2 and he'd be somewhere around 14 or 15 or so during RDR, which is about the age he looks to be in the last cutscene in RDR where he talks to John before the Army kills him.
For some reason, I was imagining a much larger gap between the two stories.
