I realize there is probably a 200 page thread for this but I'd like it summarized.

My son was just told the PlayStation does more than play movies. So it promptly died. It's a PS3. I have not looked into or researched a gaming system since I bought this PS3. Probably 2006.

1. How much are PS4? $399?

2 they've been out a while. Are they about to be replaced?

I got mine for $250 at Wal-mart last year. You should be good for a couple years.

$399 is the running price for a PS4 pro, a stronger piece of equipment than the regular, but useless without a 4k TV.

HDR is where its at , and every model of playstation 4 is capable of using it.

Honestly, buy a slim and call it a day. Its cheaper, and it gets plenty of storage. With the PS5 already in production, youll be set for awhile.

PS: 4k isnt even all that great.

He’s only 8. I did not want a fight from 4-5 years old and on over playing games etc.

The PS3 is attached to the main tv in the house. So we did not want to watch inane kid games for hours and have a 4 year old couch potato.

It was a parenting strategy. Maybe it works? Lol

Agreed.

The Pro just added SSAA. So there is one advantage in 1080. YouTube - DF on SSAA with Firmware 5.5

For a kid the base model is more than enough.

SQ: Am I the only one that thinks 4k tvs suck in general? Or is the new one I just bought a POS? Watching it feels like it should almost be 3D and it's totally different than a regular high def tv. I've had it for about 2 months now and still not use to it. Not sure I ever will be. Is a Roku TV, which I don't have a problem with it's just the picture is way different than what I'm use to and hate it currently.

You should have got a real 4k tv then. I bought a 65" Sony Bravia 4k 850E 4K tv, and its amazing. I bought a pro after I got the TV and I can't imagine going back to 1080i. The programming is still behind, but once the market is penetrated more 4K will become standard.

The highest end TVs per each manufacturer are almost always going to be 4K now. In theory this means, resolution aside, the best image and sound quality along with the best features.

It's not simply the 4K itself that makes what you watch on the TV that much more impressive unless you are literally watching 4K footage. In fact, upscaling will make content under 4K (nearly everything you watch on your TV) either look similar to native 1080p or objectively worse.

Playing a PS3 where most games are native 720p on a 4K television is horrible. watching 1080i and 720p cable broadcasts upscaled to 1080p was also not pleasant, but like I said, a lot of it has to do with how feature rich the TV itself is. The 4K TV I had was a budget model.

An 8 year old would be better off with a Nintendo Switch. The games are geared more towards kids (but still fun for adults to play along). It can be played on the TV or on the portable screen.

Check Craigslist. You can find it at less than half price.

The 2.5 games. Sure.

Plus the kid probably wants to play sports games which the Switch does not offer.

It is okay. IDK. Maybe because a lot of us PC gamers have been on 1440 since 2012-13 that makes 2160 seem meh. Just isn't impressive.

HDR really makes shows and games feel like the next level.

Yeah, the high end 4K experience is exceptional. But you definitely need the proper TV, if you have some cheap 4K tv that doesn't even offer 10 bit color or HDR then you have a faux 4K experience.

I have an Xbone S just for the 4K BluRay player and have watched probably 15 or so in a solid setup, and would rate it miles ahead of 1080. Some movies still blow my mind rewatching.

The PS4 Pro is great as well, as long as the game also offers 60FPS I will buy them on that platform for the 4K HDR experience. Shadow of the Colossus looks phenomenal, and Horizon is ridiculous on it as well.

100% It took me 3 4K TVs and a Pro playing Horizon Zero Dawn to realize how much HDR matters. Granted the entry to 2160p + HDR became much cheaper from early-2016 to mid-2017.

Haven't viewed uncompressed 4K yet. So only experience is with streaming or torrent. Was really hoping the Pro last year came with an UHD player.

I would agree movies in 4K are a major upgrade compared to 1080. But think you would agree that not all games see the resolution increase as significant in overall image quality. A big factor I believe is a game's engine and/or art style. Some games just don't benefit much from simply a sharper image. Most of the time other factors play more of a role in image quality like volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion, shadows and now HDR.
