It was on sale for $15 for everything not long ago.

I probably would've bought it if I knew that's what you guys play. I get pretty bored at times playing by myself.
ETA: It's $40 right now. I'll have to pass.

Re-installed flash, ran another scan, and the computer still locked up. :\\\\\\\\\\\\\

What were you doing when it locked up this time?

For these first-time builders having problems, I bet it's something connected improperly, or some fricked up setting, but it's going to take forever to sort out remotely. Maybe some HIGH-RES pics of every inch of the inside of the case, with good lighting, would help. And pics of bios settings, and a screenshot of the processes displayed in Task Manager.

I'm way too lazy to do all of that right now.
Maybe I'll resort to that later if nothing else works.

So, like an idiot, I had the CPU cooler facing the wrong way. I ended up choosing to slide it 90 degrees (a horrible idea, I would guess), but I imagine that ruined the thermal paste. Should I just clean off the thermal paste from the CPU and cooler and reapply the thermal paste, or will it be okay?
ETA: I cleaned it off and reapplied it.

That guy's preferred method is the best one for its simplicity, but his logic is a little far-reaching in some of those demos. He ended up producing an acceptable result with the methods he was intending to dispute. Like his first spread method, not a bad one at all. The tiny amount of seepage from a thin, even spread on the IHS would not even come close to PCB.
I go through phases where I want to test out new TIMs and application methods, and most of the wide range of "recommended methods" work about the same if done properly (correct amounts, taking your time for even distribution).
I generally use either the spread with a card (not a fricking screwdriver) method, or the pea-sized dab and press. Some of the higher performing TIMs have thin consistency (not as thin liquid pro, but thinner than AS5), and that texture is easier for me to spread.
But all that is to say, when in doubt, use a pea-sized dab in the center.
Also, Htown, if you have a Hyper 212 and you were able to turn it 90 degrees without loosening anything, you did not secure the center pin correctly.

This. In my experience it is almost always a loose or incomplete connection.

A question to the AMD enthusiast.
What is a good MOBO and CPU either combo, or jsut the CPU for entry level gaming? i am extremely illiterate when it comes to understanding AMD products.

the girl friend wants to build hereself a PC and i hear you can get the AMD parts for a little cheaper than Intel so i wanted to look into it, but i know nothing about AMD and there is so many CPUs for them lol. She mainly wants to play wow and stream her episodes of true blood.... shes very demanding lol

I would spend the $30 more and get the 6350 and call it good enough for that. If she isn't OC'ing or doing anything crazy then a 970 board should get her by.
Posted on 8/5/13 at 9:07 am to stout
lets say she was to do just a little OCing what would be the next step up you recommend
thanks as always stout

entry level board would be a 970 chipset board.
entry level cpu would be a athlon II x3 450/455. thats assuming the board you chose has core unlock potential because the 450s unlock into phenom B50s, turning a $70 cpu into a $110 cpu.
if thats all way too much for you, then entry level cpu would be a FX6300 (which is the same price as the FX4300 for some reason).
do not, under any circumstances, buy a FX X1XX (zambezi) model cpu. big big jump in performance from X1XX to X3XX (vishera).
