Like I’ve mentioned before, this next build is intended to be my “last” 3440x1440 build. Short of component failure, I’m planning to keep everything pretty much as is until such a time that I think both 5k/2k monitors have matured to the point that they are worth buying *and* GPUs have sufficiently advanced such that I could upgrade my GPU/build a rig that could push 90fps+ on that monitor at high+ settings. Which, at current pacing, I would anticipate being five or so years from now.

Non gaming-

I have a sister that is looking for a simple machine, just MS office, email, and internet. No gaming. What's a good budget CPU w/ integrated graphics that I can build into a machine totaling about $350. She is saying she wants a laptop but i'm trying to get her to let me build something.

Check out this part list. This Pc includes the amd 5600g and 16gb of ram with 1tb m.2 storage, so plenty of ram for basic tasks and multiple applications and fast storage for fast boots. The CPUs igpu should be fine for simple youtube/Netflix at 1080p and cooler is included, however it is a little over the $350 budget.

I didn’t include OS considering windows 11 can be installed for free.

Part list

Thanks for taking the time to do this. Still in a laptop mindset but I'll definitely come back to this if minds can be changed.

Hey guys, my father in law is getting into WW 2 combat flight simulators and I wanted to get your ideas for a parts list for a 1080p machine for him. What would it take to play IL-2 Sturmovik at max settings?

Edited to add that I live 40 minutes from a microcenter if that helps.

How difficult is it to get GPUs once the new series is released?

I've been on gaming laptops for the last 5-6 years due to travel schedule, but that is no longer the case. Finally want to build something (or possibly buy a pre built if it's the only way to get the newest GPUs without waiting). Trying to determine now if I should go with 4090 or wait until 50 series. I'm not in a huge rush now, so waiting makes more sense. But if it'll be 6 months after release before I can actually get a 50 series, I don't know if I have that patience

I’m not personally familiar with the title, but after a little Reddit perusal, anything reasonably modern should be fine. What’s your budget?

The 40 series wasn’t terrible to get, but it’s hard to tell whether that was because availability was actually better, or whether it was simply a market response to people being really disappointed with the pricing.

I expect availability for the 50 series to be more similar to the 30 series (read: very bad) unless Nvidia does something really, really stupid with pricing. There’s a ton of pent up demand right now.

Really just depends on your price sensitivity and whether you’re going to get hardcore FOMO when the next gen beats the brakes off of your card a few months after you buy it.

AMD Ryzen 9000 desktop series with 16, 12, 8 and 6 Zen5 core configs reportedly launches in July

As the article mentions, the x3D has generally launched about 6 months later, so we could potentially be seeing a 9800x3D in very late Q4 or early 2025 if this shakes out to be accurate.

Are we prepared for if the 7800x3d out performs these in gaming?

I have nothing to back this up, but if I were to just throw a dart, I would expect the 7800x3D to out perform the 9800x in very cache sensitive games, with the 9800x either trading blows or outperforming it in games that aren't particularly cache sensitive, though I would still expect the older x3D chip to have better 1% lows.

But again, pure speculation.

so i have an Ethernet cable question that's more someone else confirming my thoughts than anything.

Ran and crimped my first cable this past weekend through the house with no luck on internet making it to my computer. I have a tester and it's reading no signal on the 2 and 3 pin. Just to confirm......that means it could be a problem ANYWHERE from one connector to the next including a short somewhere in the wire, right?

I'm just really hoping it's a bad crimp-job before I have to run another 60-75 feet through some pain in the arse crawl areas in the attic. It's hot as a bitch up there and I really do NOT want to do that again.

I would cross post this on Tech. We have a few guys that really know their networking, and while they sometimes post here, you can usually catch them more quickly in a dedicated thread over there.

I honestly forgot that board existed.

I spoke with a friend knowledgeable about this stuff. He said usually this happens because people aren’t putting the crimping tool on a flat, sturdy surface and it causes the wires to move around or the pins to not properly crimp. I was definitely just holding it in my hand the entire time. So I’m just going to snip the ends off and re-punch them.

I just repunched both ends and it works great now.
