I've looked at those in the store and they are atrocious. They are usually the intel stock fan.
Should he wait for the new Ryzen CPU's to come out? They are actually very good apparently.
eta actually the one he showed has a AIO liquid cooler.

It's a single 120mm cooler that's likely a POS

you guys crack me up. i appreciate the effort guys. i'm considering upgrading now. i'll keep these in mind.
i do have a question about RAM though. what do i need to look for in good RAM? i'm not one that digs into what makes the computer tick. i wouldn't notice what good RAM and bad RAM does based on what happens on screen. everything else (cpu, gpu, HDD/SDD) is pretty obvious to me.

Then you definitely dont need to spend the extra money on K series processors.
But for the ram, mostly just good timings and high speeds

i don't really have a reason as to why, but i feel like i prefer AMD anyway. what ryzen series would you think i should get? 5? 7? is there a 8 already?

That's why I went with the lower fan for cooling as likely they weren't going to utilize the potential OC but just went with the K for future proofing if they wanted to dabble then they can upgrade.

Their new CPU's are coming out soon. I think July? They are supposed to be pretty beastly.

Something like that will work for you just fine. DDR4 3000/3200 is more than adequate.
EDIT: With memory, your concerned about frequency, and CAS latency mainly. For brands, I'm partial to Kingston/HyperX and Corsair.

Would not recommend this if your going for overclocking.

Ryzen 5 is the best bang for buck IMO. An Intel 8400/9400 and 9600k will probably beat it in some titles, but all Ryzen processors are unlocked, and if Ryzen 3000 series gives decent improvement on overclocking, a Ryzen 5 3XXX processor will probably beat those.

Prices for that memory months ago were just nuts.

Yeah luckily I got mine long ago before the crazy prices.
ETA: I paid $109 for 16GB of it in 2016

I've seen some b dies going for ~$100 recently. Doesn't hynix have their CJR dies that compete closely with the b dies now?

can you dumb that down some more and relate it to something else i might be familiar with?

Get reputable brands and the speed to price you are comfortable with.
