I am seriously considering picking up Dell's 27 in GSync monitor and adding a second GTX980 to my PC with my tax refund.
Hell if I have H&R block send me my refund as an Amazon gift card they will add 10% extra to it. That would be $220 in free money for me.

What model is the monitor?
I would wait on purchasing another 980. You will be 1 generation and 2(technically 3) releases behind. nVidia has been terrible with driver support for cards that old as of late. Don't pair a 2yr old card with another 2yr old card.
Wait for Pascal.

Maybe I will wait for Pascal and do a full overhaul then.
Right now I have an i5-3570k and 16gb of DDR3

Dual 980s isn't all it's cracked up to be. Allows for extra eye candy like hairworks, ultra HBAO+, physx, etc., but does frick all for higher resolutions in a good many of games lately.
I wouldn't buy a DDR5 card at all right now.
Hoping to do an overhaul by the end of the year if I can. It's been a long time since I've done a true overhaul. Mostly aesthetics and cooling overhauls, and the hardware upgrades have been incremental.
I still can't make up my mind between 4k/60hz and 1440P/144hz. I suppose I'll have my answer by 2H 2016.

As someone with 1440P 144Hz, I would wait for a 4K 144Hz. I'd much rather have 144Hz over 60 with higher resolution.
I don't think there's a 4K 144 made atm, and may not be even by years end, and if so I can only image the price.
I just know I couldn't go backwards from 144Hz.

SSD is going to be here Thursday
Should Windows 10 be easy to install onto a fresh drive?

So here's the thing...if you're upgrading from 7, you'll have to install 7 on it first.

What's this?
Nah but seriously I think I am going to owe a pretty large chunk and that's with paying in quarterly. My estimated just wasn't high enough during the year and I realize that now that I am sending 1099s to all of my subs
I am hoping to work some magic on all of the shite I purchased this year and deduct it all now instead of depreciating it over time.

I could and have before in favor of 1440P years ago. I would love to have both, but had to prioritize at the time. Same situation again. I'm certainly not going to wait for a panel that doesn't exist yet, and high refresh wouldn't do me any good for 4K anyway until the hardware catches up. Really, my decision all hinges on how well a pair of either Polaris or Pascal GPUs handles 4K/Ultra, and which ones do it better.

So my work PC just died, it wont boot windows and when I load it with a boot tool it won't read the drive and the file system say "RAW" not NTFS. Our IT company is trying to recover the data but I may be fricked.

Mother of god, the thing is half plastic.

It will hold. That is what the backplates are for. I have a Thermalright Macho that is larger than that.

AMD has officially launched the GPUOpen site. LINK
It’s Time to Open up the GPU
Looks like so far there are counterparts to HBAO+, Hairworks, and PCSS.
It’s Time to Open up the GPU
quote:
Introducing GPUOpen — an AMD initiative designed to enable developers to create ground-breaking PC games, computer generated imagery and GPU computing applications for great performance and lifelike experiences using no cost and open development tools and software.
quote:
GPUOpen is based on three principles:
The first is to provide code and documentation allowing PC developers to exert more control on the GPU. Current and upcoming GCN architectures (such as Polaris) include many features not exposed today in PC graphics APIs, and GPUOpen aims to empower developers with ways to leverage some of those features. In addition to generating quality or performance advantages such access will also enable easier porting from current-generation consoles (XBox One™ and PlayStation 4) to the PC platform.
The second is a commitment to open source software. The game and graphics development community is an active hub of enthusiastic individuals who believe in the value of sharing knowledge. Full and flexible access to the source of tools, libraries and effects is a key pillar of the GPUOpen philosophy. Only through open source access are developers able to modify, optimize, fix, port and learn from software. The goal? Encouraging innovation and the development of amazing graphics techniques and optimizations in PC games.
The third is a collaborative engagement with the developer community. GPUOpen software is hosted on public source code repositories such as GitHub as a way to enable sharing and collaboration. Engineers from different functions will also regularly write blog posts about various GPU-related topics, game technologies or industry news.
Looks like so far there are counterparts to HBAO+, Hairworks, and PCSS.

I'll be sort of near a Microcenter this week when I'm in Edgewood, MD. Not sure what I'd buy, though. Probably just end up getting tools or something.

I'm sure that makes it light and cheap. Maybe it's the sturdy, non-melty plastic?

Went shockingly well for me. Be wary to opt out of the spy stuff at the beginning (if you're concerned about that sort of thing). There is a lot of that.
But, Windows 10 to SSD was more of a minutes than hours proposition for me.

They let you install onto a new drive?
