What classes is everyone planning to roll with?
Whatever ranged class it was that has shotgun and grenade launcher type effects.
Ready to absolutely mow down everything.

I've been playing it a little today.
The combat is way more detailed and strategic than most ARPGs, which to me is a good thing. You actually have to pay attention. I tried hardcore and died at level 6 (RIP BOZO). Will play standard until I learn it better.
The "combat" in ARPGs is typically just run around and mass spam one big AOE skill to kill everything on the screen with absolutely no thought or strategy.
That's fine and enjoyable but after 25 years the genre could use a different approach.
Divorcing the skill gems from gear was a great decision too. An advanced character in POE couldn't change a piece of gear with investing a gazillion orbs getting the colors and links right.
Apparently lots of people are complaining it's too hard because they're trying to play it the traditional mindless way they are used to. I'm sure in time people will come up with extreme OP builds.

I was somewhat looking forward to this, but it seems like yet another game that has been ruined by this obsession with turning everything into a soulslike

I’m really enjoying the game. Went with Monk class, trying to build a character that is 1/2 Raiden, 1/2 sub zero.
At level 14 and my class feels pretty OP right now. Damage output is good and have found a good balance between evasion, energy shield, and armor that has HP refilling.
We’ll see how much longer it holds up. Overall I haven’t had much trouble with bosses. I think maybe 3-4 took 3 times to beat. Some I’ve just been able to cheese. My experience with ARPG games is Elden Ring.
I really enjoyed that game, but constantly felt under leveled, even if I was in the same level tier on the map.
Actually feel like I’m progressing a build in this game.

There's nothing really souls like about it besides being somewhat required to use a dedicated dodge roll mechanic.

Do stash tabs carry over or do we have to buy them again?

They carry over, I had forgotten about that announcement. They said last year that any purchases made in POE1 that could be applied to POE2 would.
So yeah, tabs (by far the most useful thing you can buy) carry over.
Drops are much stingier in POE2 though, both gear and currency. I'm level 8 and still using a lot of rano-crap gear.
You can tell they made a concerted effort to nerf overall player power compared to POE1 when you can very quickly become an uber-killing machine.

That is what I am rolling. OP until around act II then it gets a touch challenging. Still learning the ropes though.

Another way they upped the difficulty is simply locking portals during boss fights.
In almost every ARPG I've ever played you could portal out of the fight mid fight if things were going south or run out the area.
In POE2 the arena is closed and portals are disabled. You basically win the fight or you die. Which feels way more how it should be than TP'ing out 15 times and just winning by attrition.

I was really hoping D4 would have a layer of difficulty. I hate wiping a screen of mobs with a single ability. I have more confidence GGG will stay the course on challenge.

It's fun for sure, but some of these bosses are literally brick walls.
Game is a lot more difficult than I anticipated. I can't imagine playing it on a higher difficulty.

I'm loving pretty much every thing they changed. They took all the clunkier mechanics of POE1 and refined them so that htey are still int he game in a much more flexible way that meshes with all the other systems.
Like having a dedicated "spirit" resource for reservations now instead of just using HP or Mana.
The slower movement and more deliberate pace of combat makes the RPG aspect stand out more which I personally enjoy. You can kinda of feel the atmosphere and combat and actually see and think about what's going on rather than just zerging through and blowing everything up.
The only thing they may have to address are the really low drop rates. The loot pinata effect of these games gives them their addictive quality. Much like a slot machine it needs to pay out sometimes to create the excitement. If you play for hours and no rares or unique drop, it doesn't give you the rush often enough to keep you coming back.

ive heard melee is very disappointing to play. anyone rocking warrior and hows it feel?
Posted on 12/11/24 at 11:47 am to caro81
The monk im running is melee oriented. Of the tier list videos I've watched, the only class that wasnt at least A tier was the warrior. I havent tried warrior yet though.

I'm playing Warrior and am getting by fine. Melee always has it harder in these type of games. There was one area where pretty much every mob left sutff on the ground after death and that was the only time so far I was like "god playing melee sucks"
Playing ranged or caster just doesn't seem as fun to me as getting up close and smashing things though.

Warrior has been tough, but I’m still enjoying it. I’ve always gravitated towards the melee classes in these types of games and I’m generally willing to put up with stuff that would drive others away. Poe 2 warrior isn’t something I’d recommend to most…not unless you’re someone who really enjoys melee even knowing the inherent challenges it’ll present.
Some specifics. It could be my build, but I find I really struggle with single target DPS. Group AoE seems fine. It could be generic to the game, I haven’t played any other classes to know, but mobility feels bad. Even with all the armor and all I still don’t find my survivability to be great. I’ll still die really quick if I don’t dodge certain mechanics almost perfectly.
That’s been my experience so far. All that said, I’m enjoying the game for the early access version it is. I expect we’ll see some balancing changes that’ll fix some of the issues with melee at the current moment.

This is a great point and I'm having the same issue.
I noticed this when I did a replay of the full PoE 1 campaign earlier this year. It seems one way they helped melee was making pretty much all melee attacks AOE by default. There are very few single target attacks or skills in the game, even generic weapon swings now have a radius. Overall that's a positive and helps with large packs of generic mobs.
However the one small pro melee classes use to have was really big single target smashers. Melee were very good at boss fights or fights against unique mobs because of this. Int a way melee now feels caster ish because even as a warrior I'm almost always using some sort of AOE.
You notice it most in boss fights, you would prefer a heavy hitting single target skill and they just don't seem to exist. You're spamming these AOE style attacks which feel sub-optimal for a single mob.
