I've been seeing Pikachu pop up around my house for 3 or 4 days now and could never find it. Hatched a 2km egg this morning and look what was in there 
On another note, my 10km egg hatched immediately afterwards and a fricking pidgey was in there

It's complicated :D I created batch files to run my searches instead of typing out the long commands all the time. I'm sure someone is working on making this a lot more user friendly.

Have they figured out a way to filter only the rarer Pokemon that are spawning, in say, a 2-mile radius?

I just caught my first Pikachu while setting up the cribs in the nursery room last night. Just popped up right on top of me.

I think the best thing to in this game, especially in the beginning, is to just catch everything in sight.

Generally speaking, that's what I do. I had a HORRIBLE dilemma this morning coming into work through. I usually try to quick hit and spin the pokestops on my way to work while flying down the highway without stopping. Well, as I was passing the cemetery this morning, right when I went to click the Pokestop, and Eevee popped up next to it. I had to decide on the Pokestop or the Eevee.

Just farm stops for eggs. 5 pts is actually a pretty good spot. You can walk up and down Highland and hit like 8 stops. Botanical Gardnes is another great location. It has 4 gyms and 29 stops.
